French Government Enforces Sunday Rest

Wednesday, July 5, 2006

Thou shalt not shop on Sunday.

French courts have ruled that the Louis Vuitton flagship store must remain closed on Sundays in accordance with law. The New York Times appropriately titled its article “A French war over ‘day of the Lord.’”

The suit was brought against the famous Paris fashion house by the French Confederation of Christian Workers. Three facts are revealing:

1) The union in question has no employees at the store.

2) All 300 employees of the store voted in favor of opening on Sundays.

3) An Ipsos telephone survey in April showed that 75 percent of French citizens polled approve of stores opening on Sunday.

Those three facts—along with every fact associated with this case—change nothing though. If every American citizen expressed a desire, even by vote, to go 50 miles an hour over the speed limit in school zones, they would still be violating law. In this case, French law was clearly violated: Thou shalt rest on Sunday.

But where does a law like that come from, especially when the citizens of the nation don’t want it? How can the French government defend that law’s existence?

The popular defense of the law is that small merchants can’t compete with larger retailers that have the resources to remain open on Sunday and therefore need government protection. That is, of course, poppycock. The law itself is 100 years old—a time when said large retailers simply didn’t have that ability. The National Clothing Federation might be able to make that argument today, but it has nothing to do with the origins of enforced rest of Sunday.

Enforced Sunday worship began with the Roman Empire—specifically Constantine.

In a letter following the Nicene Council of a.d. 325, Constantine spoke of the enforcement of Sunday worship for Easter services: “At this meeting the question concerning the most holy day of Easter was discussed, and it was resolved by the united judgment of all present that this feast ought to be kept by all and in every place on one and the same day.” In other words, Easter was to be kept on Sunday, and the Jewish observance of Passover was expressly forbidden.

In another letter, specifically regarding Sabbath worship, Constantine wrote, “Forasmuch, then, as it is no longer possible to bear with your pernicious errors, we give warning by this present statute that none of you henceforth presume to assemble yourselves together. We have directed, accordingly, that you be deprived of all the houses in which you are accustomed to hold your assemblies: and our care in this respect extends so far as to forbid the holding of your superstitious and senseless meetings, not in public merely, but in any private house or place whatsoever. Let those of you, therefore, who are desirous of embracing the true and pure religion, take the far better course of entering the Catholic Church …. [F]rom this day forward none of your unlawful assemblies may presume to appear in any public or private place. Let this edict be made public.”

After this edict was made, worship on any day except Sunday was illegal. This was confirmed at the Council of Laodicea almost 40 years later, in a.d. 363. At that conference, it was determined, “Christians must not Judaize by resting on the Sabbath [that is, Saturday], but must work on that day, rather honoring the Lord’s Day. … But if any shall be found to be Judaizers, let them be anathema [cursed and excommunicated] from Christ.”

At the Council of Tours in a.d. 1163, Pope Alexander iii was even more specific: “Whereas a damnable heresy has for some time lifted its head in the parts about Toulouse, and already spread infection through Gascony and other provinces, concealing itself like a serpent in its folds; as soon as its followers shall have been discovered, let no man afford them refuge on his estates; neither let there be any communication with them in buying and selling: so that, being deprived of the solace of human conversation, they may be compelled to return from error to wisdom.” In other words, if you worship on some day other than Sunday, you can’t do business.

That is where Sunday labor laws have their origin. Working on Sunday marks those who do so as pernicious in the eyes of the Roman Catholic Church, a stance many European governments have supported throughout the last 1,700 years.

Today, Louis Vuitton is having extreme difficulty selling its handbags on the Catholic day of rest. In the future, as Europe becomes more integrated and the Vatican takes on a greater leadership role, we know that Sunday observance will be enforced as an identifying sign of the next incarnation of the Holy Roman Empire.

I have been saying for a long time that this was coming because the Bible clearly portrays it as well as history like this article mentions Constantine. Now the Mark of the Beast is truly here and we will begin to see it being enforced more and more rigidly by civil authorities who are under direction of the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope.

G-d bless in your search for Truth

Gad!

Sounds almost like the Dark Ages didn't happen!

There's a lot of other stuff too ~ just didn't happen.

Lower Ontario used to shut down all the retailers on Wednesday afternoon ~ one imagines that the Mark of the Beast in Windsor must have been "665.25"

The Bible says God rested on the seventh day. We're not God. Kids have to be fed and clothed on Sunday. Crops and livestock have to be tended on Sunday. And if it gets down to it, which day is really Sunday?

Blue Laws are ridiculous. We were once on vacation and were hungry. There was no place to eat since everything was closed. We finally found a tiny grocery store open so bought a couple cans of pork and beans because that didn't need to be cooked. When we got to the cashier, she would sell us the beans but not the can opener. So, we went hungry the entire day. This was before the days of convenience junk food so we were out of luck.

John O'Brien, Ph.D., LL.D.: "But since Saturday, not Sunday, is specified in the Bible, isn't it curious that non-Catholics who profess to take their religion directly from the Bible, and not the Church, observe Sunday instead of Saturday? Yes of course, it is inconsistent; but this change was made about 15 centuries before Protestantism was born, and by that time the custom was universally observed. They have continued the custom, even though it rests upon the authority of the Catholic Church and not upon an explicit text in the Bible. That observance remains as a reminder of the Mother Church from which the non-Catholic sects broke away - like a boy running away from home but still carrying in his pocket a picture of his mother or a lock of her hair." Faith of Millions, pp. 543 and 544.

The nutjobs are out in force today. If found this curiosity posted several times in a local forum.

It hitting this planet, would probably destroy a whole half of this country for example. But what people do not think about, which they should, is that even if it misses this planet, this will harm our ozone, a long with our axis and orbit, my feeling is most here will not understand what i am talking about. But let's just think a tad here, huh?? If someone told you what i just typed to you, and this same man was a medical physician, that has done many heart surgeries, and abdominal surgeries, i'll bet you would listen to what he was trying to say to you all.

It is recorded and fact, that the Lord, once allowed this earth to flood, and had Noah build the Ark, while others laughed at him and thought he was crazy, well take it from there, also it is recorded fact, the Lord stated i will never again let the earth destroy mankind with water this way again.

Also take note of the fact, mamouths, the huge elephants found many times under frozen ice on the north pole, it is proven these animals could have when they lived, only have survived in a tropic type climate, proving this earth once did for fact turn completely upside down (actually sideways, as these elephants would have had to have been in a midland area). Many of us in my field, cannot say directly how we know these things, same as a few others who would understand i feel the need to not let the public panic from knowledge learned and known.

Anyway, you all don't worry, everything is going to be okay, even if this thing collides with our earth, we won't be gone forever, take note your soul last forever!!...Earl

P.S. What many need to do, is to read the seven seals in revelation

I didn't have the heart to tell philosopher "earl" that the asteroid has already passed.

The correct link for your story is here: The Trumpet

This article is a lie for the sole purpose of spreading anti-Catholic propaganda.

This Louis Vuitton store in fact will be open this Sunday and every Sunday thereafter. See: Paris spring in step for Sunday shoppers

This is not a news story it is an opinion peice based on a lie.

IMO, those "blue laws" are the only thing holding back the corporate juggernauts from taking over civilization....

Starbucks To Begin Sinister 'Phase Two' Of Operation

Though the coffee chain's specific plans are not known, existing Starbucks franchises across the nation have been locked down with titanium shutters across all windows. In each coffee shop's door hangs the familiar Starbucks logo, slightly altered to present the familiar mermaid figure as a cyclopean mermaid whose all-seeing eye forms the apex of a world-spanning pyramid....

....More insight into Phase Two was provided by the company's most recent quarterly stockholders' report, which features a map of North America showing the location of every existing Starbucks. Lines drawn between the various stores form geometric patterns across the U.S., including five-pointed stars, Masonic symbols, and, in the Seattle area, the image of a gigantic Oroborous serpent wrapped around an inverted ziggurat.
