Kool-Aid Anyone?

I don't have time this morning to write a full bodied commentary on the quiet meeting between the ABC and eight Episcopalian bishops this week. I would love to do so because there is at least one aspect of this meeting that needs to be thought through: the guest list.

Lambeth palace is downplaying the significance of this meeting, but the guest list is telling:

Meeting with the archbishop and his senior advisors were the Rt. Rev. Gary Lillibridge, Bishop of West Texas; the Rt. Rev. John B. Lipscomb, Bishop of Southwest Florida; the Rt. Rev. Edward Little II, Bishop of Northern Indiana; the Rt. Rev. D. Bruce MacPherson, Bishop of Western Louisiana; the Rt. Rev. Edward L. Salmon, Jr., Bishop of South Carolina; the Rt. Rev. James M. Stanton, Bishop of Dallas; the Rt. Rev. Jeffrey N. Steenson, Bishop of the Rio Grande; and the Rt. Rev. Geralyn Wolf, Bishop of Rhode Island. (From the Living Church)

As the Living Church notes, all these bishops have publicly "signed on to the recommendations of the Windsor Report." These are Windsor bishops. There is a significant theological breadth between bishop Wolfe of Rhode Island and bishop Stanton of Dallas, but these are all Windsor bishops.

If I were working for 815, I would find it very difficult, at least privately, to ignore this guest list or to see it as anything other than a very clear signal with regard to future invitations to..er...larger Communion gatherings...if you get my drift.

The Living Church opines,

Fears that the meeting was a 'strategy session' or a bid to undermine the constitutional authority of the General Convention or the Episcopal Church’s dioceses were unfounded, sources said.

Yes, no doubt the meeting was neither a "strategy session" nor a subversion of "constitutional authority," but if the Living Church really thinks this meeting is merely "pastoral" and politically insignificant they have been drinking way too much Kool-Aid.
