Handicapping GenCon
Midwest Conservative Journal ^ | 5/09/2006 | Christopher Johnson

So what is going to happen in Columbus next month?  My Anglican prognostication record has been horrible pretty much since the start of the Current Unpleasantness(I never thought Robbie would get a pointy hat, I thought the Windsor Report would be much tougher than it was and the horse I backed in the recent California episcopal election, Bonnie "It's a Crown Green Bowls Set, Not a Pizza Oven" Perry, didn't even finish the race) so don't place your bets based on what you read here.

But I think that nothing substantive will emerge.  Given the make-up of ECUSA and the weakness of ECUSA conservatives, I think the Special Commission report will pass easily.  ECUSA can point to California and say, "See?  We had a chance to elect another homosexual and we didn't."  As for same-sex marriages, everyone knows that regardless of what ECUSA says about them, nothing whatsoever will happen to the bishops who "bravely" allow them anway.

(Sudden paranoid thought: were the three homosexual candidates in California put up just to lose?  Based on the votes each received, none of the three had even a remote shot to win and their vote totals dropped with each ballot.  Either the three were abysmal candidates or they were stalking-horses, in the field so that ECUSA could say that it turned down a homosexual.)

The question then becomes what the Network bishops will do.  If the Special Commission report passes, and I think it will, the Network has to begin putting definite distance between itself and ECUSA.  This doesn't need to be an immediate split.  But the Network bishops should issue a minority report taking issue with what GenCon has decided, if not at GenCon itself than to any media person with an e-mail address.

The wild card is Newark.  Spongy's old and the Crewser's current bailiwick holds a convention to elect a new bishop at the end of September.  If a practicing homosexual is elected there, then Episcopal affairs will clarify.  We may begin to see conservative primates demanding that ECUSA be kept out of Anglican Communion affairs, that the next Presiding Bishop be barred from Anglican primates meetings and that ECUSA bishops be barred from Lambeth.

Whatever happens, I think this story has a good distance to go before it is resolved.

So what is going to happen in Columbus next month?

1. A new BCP authorized to bless same sex unions.
2. A revision of the Nicaean Creed that eliminates the words "the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God" plus "became incarnate from the Virgin Mary" and "on the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures".
3. A exemption so (all whether Muslim, Buddist, Shinto, Atheist or any unbaptized church attendee) can participate in the Holy Eucharist.
4. A recommendation considered for next GC to allow pedophelia as a recognized and holy union as long as the two partners agree.
5. Finally, a walkout of the faithful resulting in the eventual and universal collapse of the Episcopal Church of the United States.
