Stella Maris & Custos Maris

Posted on 04/30/2006 11:08:53 PM PDT by Macoraba

One of Our Lady's most ancient titles is Stella Maris - Star of the Sea. There does not seem to be a set feast day. Thus I propose that Columbus Day, 12 October, would be most appropriate especially for us here in the Western Hemisphere for that feast day!

Several years ago our late Holy Father Pope John Paul the Great bestowed upon Our Lady's most chaste spouse the title of CUSTOS - Guardian.

So I was thinking that as Our Lady is Stella Maris that Saint Joseph should be CUSTOS MARIS! Most fitting and proper!

And as the feast day of Stella Maris would be 12 October the date the great Columbus, proto evangelist of the New World, first set foot in the Americas during his First Voyage, so too would not 16 January be most appropriate for the feast day of Custos Maris? That was the date the great Columbus set sail for his return to Spain on the First Voyage. Plus 16 January in 1493 was a Wednesday, Saint Joseph's special day!

Ave, maris stella,
Dei Mater alma,
Atque semper virgo,
Felix coeli porta.

Sumens illud Ave Gabrielis ore,
Funda nos in pace,
Mutans Evae nomen.

Solve vinyl reis,
Profer lumen caecis,
Mala nostra pelle,
Bona cuncta posce.

Monstra te esse matrem,
Sumat per te preces,
Qui pro nobis natus,
Tulit esse tuus.

Virgo singularis,
Inter omnes mitis,
Nos culpis solutos
Mites fac et castos.

Vitam praesta puram,
Iter pare tutum;
Ut videntes Jesum,
Semper collaetemur.

Sit laus Deo Patri,
Summo Christo decus,
Spiritui Sancto,
Tribus honor unus. Amen.

Interestingly enough, I've hit a couple of Star of the Sea parishes in vacation towns I've been to. Unfortunately, the parishes are about what you'd expect at a vacation town.
