That is a perfect Scripture selection for this thread, dear Knitting! All of the law and the prophets hang on two commandments:
Master, which [is] the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Matthew 22:36-40
For the conversation which has followed: Concerning the unborn, the handicapped, the primitive, the ones (such as Abraham) who never heard the Gospel, we should remember that mercy and compassion is at God's discretion:
For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. Romans 9:15
