Containment

I will not be posting a new column today. I wrote today's Lenten reflection over on Lent and Beyond and some pressing parish business has come up. But I did want to pass along this response I posted on titusonenine to a poster calling himself Penafort. Penafort wants to press beyond "Containment" and push for a "Rollback" strategy. While I definitely agree that ultimately Rollback will be necessary, I do not think NOW is the time. Here's my response:

You said:

“Real repentance requires turning around and making amends. Can and will the HoB as a sign of their new found repentance remove any individual bishops(VGR) and clergy(Susan Russell) and laity(Louie Crew) from their positions in the church as a way show that they really mean to turn around and make such amends. Anyone who believes this, I will offer him a nice stone bridge for sale which goes from Manhattan into Brooklyn.”

I agree with you about what real repentance would require. However I think it would at this point be just as much a mistake for the Network et al to insist upon something MORE stringent than the WR as it would be to settle for something less.

Again, the WR is a hill the Communion chose. Let’s stand on it.

Containment, as I argued here:

Containment is the name of the game.

From the Windsor hilltop we can begin the long slog of reforming ECUSA. Right now, our immediate goal is defending and upholding the WR line.

The two moratoriums (against SSU’s and future consecrations) and the acknowledgement by way of regret/repentance of the “constraints of the bonds of affection” will at the very least provide an acceptable (not perfect or great but acceptable) basis of future operations.

There is great hope if WR is upheld and ECUSA complies. There is very little/none, if there is no compliance and we live with it.

We must begin, here and now, with Full Compliance, nothing less and nothing more.
