you said that the Classical Roman rite was the rite that best expressed the Catholic faith.

If this statement is made based on a comparison of the TLM with the NO, then he is right. Otherwise, Msgr. Schmitz needs to be reminded that Jesus was a Jew (as were His apostles and Blessed Mother), lived, died and resurrected in the Middle East, and spoke Aramaic. St. Peter went to Antioch long before he stepped foot inside Italy. That said, the Antiochene - Syriac Divine Liturgy would be the the rite that best expresses the Catholic faith, for it alone retains the original Jewish heritage of the Catholic Church.

I don't mean to sound gruff, but Msgr. Schmitz has a licentiate in dogmatic theology, and is a canon lawyer, and was trained in the Roman seminary, and ordained by the current Pope.

The readership of The Wanderer (and 99% of Catholics in the world) attend the Novus Ordo or TLM liturgies, part of the Latin liturgical tradition. I'm quite certain that Msgr. knows about the other rites in the Church, and he was speaking about the Latin rite. It is also not current to infer that Jesus spoke only Aramaic, despite the "scholars" continuation on this point. There is evidence he spoke Latin, and perhaps even sang the Psalms in Latin with the Blessed Mother. He also may have spoken Hebrew and Greek. In fact, being the Son of God, I'm quite certain he could have spoken any language he wanted to.

The comparison was within the Latin liturgical tradition, as the headline states. And whether or not the Antiochene-Syriac Liturgy truly is the rite that best expressed the Catholic Faith simply because it retains the Jewish heritage is questionable on many accounts.
