Let me correct myself: charity, not hope is the first theological virtue. Oops. We can't have the virtues out of order.
How else can the church keep track of salvation without the petty legalism of scoring sins, alphabetizing transgressions and ordering virtues by number?

St. Paul does seem to make a point of saying that, of the cardinal virtues of faith, hope, and love, love is the greatest.
