Another reason that you should be using the KJV Bible.

I have always believed in Jesus as Lord and Savior. I have not always believed that one version of the Bible is better until the last 10 years or so. I have always read from the Authorized King James Version. Most likely because the Lord did not want me to get my understanding from any other source.

As I have gotten closer to God over the years I have learned why the KJV is the best of the translations of the original Greek and Hebrew text. Some of the reasons are that the words of the Old English which seam difficult to read and understand at first are really the most descriptive and least confusing to understand as you read. Words like Longsuffering from the KJV have been translated into patience in the NIV. Now the word are pretty similar in the definitions, but the word longsuffering shows an inflection of pain while you endure. Patience does not imply this at all. You may be patient with the guy at the counter of the DMV, but you are long suffering with a loved one while you hope they change their ways.

There are many more examples of the pitfalls of the NIV, NKJV, KJ21, NASB to numerous to get into. And if you are not willing to examine and ask the Lord to help you discern the Truth of the matter then my post is falling upon deaf ears.

There is a good book called The Language of the King James Bible , Discover its Hidden Built in Dictionary, by Gail Riplinger. It is very informative on how to understand the Old English of the KJV Bible.

But on to why I posted in the first place if you go to these links you will learn how the publishers of the NIV are also the publisher of the Satanic Bible. Their Teen study Bible is very disturbing and worldly, even mocks the Bible in a hidden way.

this thread is in reality an argument about which standardized set of New Testament texts are best, and about translation techniques

Gosh, when you put it all pedantic like that, it's no fun at all!

Speaking of fun, you should pop over to the Undead Thread and read Alice's story about bats. It's a classic!

wasn't the Queen of heaven in this context the goddess istar?

The only biblical references in the Bible to a "Queen of Heaven" are in the verses quoted. So if someone wants to elevate Mary to the position of "Queen of Heaven" are they really elevating her, or insulting her?

You didn't give me a link! You expect me to do looking stuff up after a hard morning of cleaning up library catalog records? If you check my last post on the WFTD thread, you will see how fried my brains are.

But always room for a little more pedantry. I can't help it.

Also, part of the problem is based on WHY the guys who edited the Alexandrian texts chose the texts they way they did. There is some feeling that they went looking for old texts that didn't agree with the majority, to shore up their bias. Wasn't there, don't know if this was in the back of their minds, but it wouldn't be the first time spin has been used to make a point.

Sorry - it was current when I first mentioned it :-).

There was plenty of conflict between Judean Jews and Diaspora Jews in the relevant time period, so I think it's likely that *everyone* involved had an agenda ... just as King James had an agenda in his day, and many of us do today.

I think it's pretty meaningless, except as a historical curiousity and a psychological exercise. People are risking their lives to get the Scriptures in Hmong and Farsi and that awful language they speak in Afghanistan - think they care about the niceties of Jacobean English usage?

I mean the agendas among the modern scholars chosing which texts to use as the basis for their standardized text.

And while we're complaining about bad scholarship and agendas, it seems that the Bible verses quoted in the English translation of Pope Benedict's Encyclical used the RSV and once the NRSV (where inclusive language wasn't a problem) instead of the not so good or accurate NAB, because, I suspect, the NAB really isn't the best study Bible...not as bad as the text in the lectionary, but not up to snuff.

Doesn't the Catechism use the RSV, too? I don't like the NAB, just as a matter of taste. I've always read the RSV, from the time I learned to read. I just retired the one I was given as a (Protestant( 7-year-old) and bought a new one from Ignatius last year, because the binding on the old one was too fragile for everyday use.

I always use the RSV when I read Scripture for my Sunday School class, too ... but I've encouraged the students to ask their parents for a modern-language version, if they think that would make it easier for them to understand and enjoy.

It has always bothered me that they changed the line "Come with me and I will make you fishers OF men" to "Come with me and I will make you fish for people." The first is a nice little lyrical pun, which shows Jesus' wit. The second is flat, and there was no good reason to change it.

Ah, Chaucer, I love him...

Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote
And bathed every veyne in swich licour,
Of which vertu engendred is the flour;
5 Whan Zephirus eek with his sweete breeth
Inspired hath in every holt and heeth
The tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne
Hath in the Ram his halfe cours yronne,
And smale foweles maken melodye,
10 That slepen al the nyght with open eye-
(So priketh hem Nature in hir corages);
Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages
And palmeres for to seken straunge strondes
To ferne halwes, kowthe in sondry londes;
15 And specially from every shires ende
Of Engelond, to Caunterbury they wende,
The hooly blisful martir for to seke
That hem hath holpen, whan that they were seeke.

This is my most favorite medieval poem, and it is a beautiful religious allegory, but I must admit, I tend to read it in Tolkien's translation: Here are the first section:

1
Perle, pleasaunte to prynces paye
To clanly clos in golde so clere,
Oute of oryent, I hardyly saye,
Ne proued I neuer her precios pere.
So rounde, so reken in vche araye,
So smal, so smoþe her syde3 were,
Quere-so-euer I jugged gemme3 gaye,
I sette hyr sengeley in synglere.
Allas! I leste hyr in on erbere;
Þur3 gresse to grounde hit fro me yot.
I dewyne, fordolked of luf-daungere
Of þat pryuy perle wythouten spot.

Syþen in þat spote hit fro me sprange,
Ofte haf I wayted, wyschande þat wele,
Þat wont wat3 whyle deuoyde my wrange
And heuen my happe and al my hele.
Þat dot3 bot þrych my hert þrange,
My breste in bale bot bolne and bele;
3et þo3t me neuer so swete a sange
As stylle stounde let to me stele.
For soþe þer fleten to me fele,
To þenke hir color so clad in clot.
O moul, þou marre3 a myry iuele,
My priuy perle wythouten spotte.

It's because they have no ear for language flow (although, to be honest, I don't know which is the more literal translation. My dad ran off with my interlinear NT, and I haven't replaced it.

Two people, properly matched in love and commitment become greater than the sum of their parts.

It's not necessarily about sex. But it is most certainly about love.

From the book, The Language of the King James Bible, Discover Its Hidden Built-In Dictionary, by Gail Riplinger.

There has been a remarkable recent discovery which made front page news in The Times of London ( Dec. 24, 1994). The oldest remains of any New Testament manuscript were discovered. Using a high-magnification device and the epifluoresent confocal laser scanning technique, the small fragment was dated A.D. 66. Close examination shows that it contains the King James Bible’s reading from Matthew 26:22 “hekastos auton,”--”every one of them”

It proves wrong the reading in the NIV, NASB, and all the new versions which are based on the Critical Greek text which reads, “heis hekastos,” “each one” or “one after the other.”……..

NIV

22They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?"

KJV

[22] And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?

1. The King James Bible contains God’s Built in Dictionary, defining each word, in its context, using the very words of the Webster’s and Oxford English Dictionaries!

2. The King James Bible has a vocabulary and reading level which slowly builds progressively from Genesis to Revelation.

3. The King James Bible uses words with the appropriate sound symbolism. It has a vocabulary that phonaesthetically fulfills the Bible’s own description of itself as “powerful”

4. The King James Bible is the only extant access we have to the pure language lexicons of the 16Th and 17th centuries.

5. The King James Bible gives a transparent view of the Greek and Hebrew vocabulary, grammar and syntax.

6. The King James Bible has a internationally recognizable vocabulary and spelling.

7. The King James Bible uses literary devices which enhance doctrinally important concepts and memorability.

8. The King James Bible has a sentence structure which enhances accurate doctrinal interpretations.

9. The King James Bible’s word and sentences are patterned and woven through its fabric so as to provide a consistency of form and content.

10. The King James Bible has the precision and longevity of the legal document that it is. (To be equitable, all English speaking persons must be judged by the same criteria.)

Page 16, 17.\

Now I know that most of you are going to disagree. You will say that the KJV is fallible.

Isa. 14:12 KJV

[12] How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

Isa. 14:12 NIV

How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!

When you read the word Lucifer you know who and what that is.

When you read the phrase morning star if you are a Young Christian (not physical age) it sound like a comet or a nice thing. You may even relate it to the Bright Morning Star which is Jesus, if you do not look up the Hebrew word for Lucifer.

To those of you that think there are mistakes in the KJV I commend you for upholding your beliefs. I do not know where these mistakes are.

Are they repent and be baptized, do not commit adultery, do not worship false idols, murder, lust, love thy neighbor, do not hate, forgiveness, or is it that the earth could only be 6000 years old, is the mistakes in Mark, Matthew, Luke, John where Jesus was born of a virgin birth was falsely accused and persecuted for our sins, beat, hung on a cross, died, rose victorious over Hell and Death on the 3rd day. Is it the part where he says that if we believe in him we are saved. Or is it the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

I believe that the great deceiver has some one confused either you or me about what is the truth in the word.

I myself believe that the KJV Bible is the infallible word of God. Never changing good in what every time of the world’s history.

God Bless you all.
