The impossible to understand part is how the church that preserved the Gospels for all those years would make such obviously erroneous doctrines such as bowing down to idols.

An idol is an image of a false god. We don't have images of false gods. We do often have images of the True God, Jesus Christ.

Yes, you do. You even have padded knee rests in front of the idols. Please refer to the 10 Commandments section of your catechism book. Mine has a chart illustrating that the Roman Church actually deleted idolatry from the 10.
