Chronolatry is only as good as a chronometer used for it. Do not settle for anything less than a good diamond-studded Rolex in the large platinum oyster case with a matching "president" bracelet.

"A final word from Greek mythology. The god of chronolaters is obviously the Greek god, Cronus, who looses Titans upon the earth, and reigns in heaven, consuming his own children, until the great god, Zeus, banishes him to Tartarus. Likewise, the god of present-day chronolaters will be cast from “heaven” and with him all who bow before him."

Interesting take on the situation. It demonstrates the influence of Greek pagan thought on religion to this day in the West. The Fathers all were familiar with that thought and while they used the terminology of the pagan philosophers, they utterly rejected the "creation and time" based philosophy. Instead they thanked God that He had saved them from that and made them the New Isreal. The West forgot that some time ago.

Have you noticed how both Episcopalians and Methodists now speak of the four-legged stool of theological method -- Scripture, Tradition, Reason and Experience? In this new formulation (it used to be: Scripture, Tradition and Reason, only) contemporary experience (not only personal and corporate, but also the supposed assured results of the human “sciences”) has the final word as to the place and use of the others.

Actually, the whole "3-legged stool" analogy is false. The idea of the stool image is to cause the three legs to be given equal status. But if you look at the original statement made by Hooker, you see:

"What Scripture doth plainly deliver, to that the first place both of credit and obedience is due; the next whereunto, is what any man can necessarily conclude by force of Reason; after this, the voice of the church succeedeth"

This shows that there is an order of precedence here, and that reason and tradition are subject to Scripture; neither one can overrule Scripture. So it's more like a structure where Scripture provides the foundation. Take away the foundation, and you've built your tower on sand.

Take a look here, on page 34, lines 15 - 19:

"Be it in matter of the one kind or the other, what Scripture doth plainly deliver, to that the first place of both credit and obedience is due; the next whereunto is whatsoever any man can necessarily conclude by force of reason; after these the voice of the Church succeedeth."

The "matter of the one kind or the other" are apparently issues of either order or doctrine; order being how the Liturgy is set up and executed, what kind of vestments the clergy should or should not wear, etc.
