New film about Mountain Meadows revives controversy over LDS role
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 1/24/06 | John Anderson

LOS ANGELES - As 2006 dawned, Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven - about a ''divinely ordered'' double murder in 1984 by two members of a breakaway Mormon sect - was fresh off the best-seller list. Warren Jeffs, the polygamist prophet of this splinter group, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was on FBI wanted lists. And the world's first-ever ''Mormon- sploitation Retrospective'' of vintage fear-mongering anti-Mormon movies had just finished at the fringy Pioneer Theater in New York's East Village.

In public relations terms, this is not the easiest time to have the words ''Latter,'' ''Day'' and ''Saints'' anywhere close together in your name. And the going may get rougher after the filmmaker Christopher Cain finishes his new movie about one of the darkest moments in Mormon history, the Mountain Meadows massacre of 1857, in which 137 pioneers from Arkansas were killed in Utah by a raiding party whose ties to the LDS Church are still in dispute.

An early look at parts of "September Dawn" - viewed in a West Los Angeles editing room with Cain and his longtime editor, Jack Hofstra - suggests that there will be fresh debate when it finally reaches the public.

MM, the Mormons have tried to cover up this chapter of their history.

They're not doing a very good job, considering every Mormon who's been a member for a few years knows about it, and every high school student in seminary learns about it, and every college institute class talks about it, and every church history course at BYU goes over it.

Note to self, I really must call attention to the horrible job being done by the quorum of Coverups and Conspiracies...

I'm comfortable letting God make that decision.

Yessir Rogue Mormon...

To you does that mean every available priesthood-holder in Cedar City, Parowan, and New Harmony. The scope of the involvement by white men was 50 to 70. That must have been most of the men they could round up that lived there then.

Brigham Young must have sent all the rogues to Southern Utah to get them out of his hair...yeah that must have been it! I wonder why they built that there temple in St. George for all the rogue mormons.

You see, the problem is, these folks WANT to believe it was a deep, dark conspiracy by Brigham Young to murder all these people, because it would fit their paradigm of what the Mormon church really is.

Forget that fact that the general pattern of behavior of the LDS toward non-LDS in Utah proves Moutain Meadows to be an exception, and almost certainly the act of a rogue mob (much like the Danites in Missouri).

This is all about justifying a prejudice against the LDS, and not about any facts.

Not true.

Sandcreek Massacre: 160 men, women and children murdered.
Marias Massacre: 200 men, women and children murdered.
Wounded Knee Massacre: 300 men, women and children murdered.

You are correct. I was posting a fallacy that I've seen on the internet.

Obviously we were not looking at American Indian population massacres. My bad.

Well, you obviously want to believe Brigham Young ordered the murder, then killed Lee to cover it up, and that the LDS leadership to this day has all the documents that prove their guilt locked away in a vault.

I knew a guy who was utterly convinced that WWII was started by 7 men to control the oil market. There was no way to reason with him, either, so I just quit trying.

No Mormon prophet ever said that Jesus Christ is NOT our Lord and Savior. We believe that Jesus Christ - JEHOVAH - created the earth. We believe that Jesus Christ suffered and died for our sins, that he is the ATONEMENT. I love Him with all my heart and appreciate what he did for me. I am also sorry that I caused Him all that pain and suffering. We believe that anyone who does not believe in Jesus Christ will not make it back to Heavenly Father.

I don't understand why all the controversy.

You know what frgoff. I have never, ever, ever said Brigham Young ordered the massacre. I said he was the commander of the Mormon Militia. That is the TRUTH.

George A. Smith was second in Command

Isaac Haight was president of the Parowan "stake of Zion," and as such was the ecclesiastical agent in Iron county. All the presidents of "stakes" reported to Brigham Young to whom they were directly responsible for their acts. Haight was also lieutenant colonel in the Iron county militia.

As bishop of the Parowan ward of the Parowan "stake of Zion,'' William H. Dame was under the ecclesiastical direction of President Haight. But as colonel in command of the military district comprising Iron and Washington counties Dame was the military superior of Haight.

John M. Higbee resided in Cedar City, was first counselor to Isaac C. Haight in the Parowan "stake of Zion," and was major in the Iron county militia.

There is a popular and widespread impression that John D. Lee was the leader and arch criminal of the massacre. That is not true. He held no special office in the priesthood, but was farmer to the Indians under Superintendent Brigham Young.

Now some other facts as we know them:

George A. Smith, who commanded all of the southern Utah militia units, arrived in Parowan on 8 August and began the task of preparing the people psychologically, militarily, and materially for war. The units of the Tenth Regiment of the territorial militia were mustered and drilled, and the impending battle plan was explained. Smith, an effective orator and founder of Iron and Washington counties, made several impassioned speeches and apparently accomplished his purpose. The people were convinced that they were in a state of war and were ready to take action.

Several meetings were held in Cedar City and Parowan to determine how the "War Orders" should be implemented. The militia decided that the Fancher train should be eliminated. Cooler heads prevailed temporarily and an express rider was sent to Salt Lake City to solicit Brigham Young’s advice. The round trip—more than 500 miles—took six days. In the meantime, things got completely out of hand. Orders and counter-orders were misinterpreted, deliberately or otherwise.

BTW These kind of stories always fail to mention what previous took place to the LDS!

Here LDS had to leave their homeland and belongings and planted crops etc. forced to across country and many died, even frozed to death, because of the Winter weather because the gov.Boggs order extermination of all LDS

...and this Francher party comes from Arkansas the home of Albert Pike, many of the various LDS had no clue what their purpose was for many crossing country did not take that route and at time they wer reported to be hostil towards!

so as far as I am concern the details are still unknown?

Than why are you repeating anything that pops in your head,

repeat hearsay when only God knows!

One thing I am sure of this did not come from Brigham Young!

And just because someone becomes LDS does not instantly matures thems!

We all come with bagage and foibles, but many are grown in the ways of the Lord they are blessed to be able to wait on the Lord, while others faint and do things they should not!

I think their continued denial of involvement has only added to the flame.

The church teaches about this in Church History classes. They do not try to hide it.

The guy responsible was arrested by a Mormon Sheriff, appeared before a Mormon Judge, was convicted by a Mormon jury and went to jail.

What more do you want.

Not one person was prosecuted for the Haun Mill Massacre, or the murders that took place when the Mormons were expelled from the Illinois city of Nauvoo.

The extermination order given by Missouri Governor Boggs, where Mormons could be shot on sight, was only repealed about ten years ago.

Everyone involved in all these are long dead.

Get a life.

The LDS folks would come knocking on the door when I was a young kid and ask to discuss their literature and my Mom would always say sure come on in we are just finishing up the rosery. They would run away quick. I always thought they were a cult group, but now I know they are not one, just a religion that is pretty descent. I have know a mormon or two and they are pretty nice.

Which of those events were specifically directed against the pioneers, and which against the United States Army which was then marching toward Utah, commanded by a man who had publicly stated that the best thing that could be done to the Mormons would be to burn them to the ground.

The Wikipedia entry on this is quite interesting. Make sure to also look into the debate going on regarding revising the article.

I find John Lee's vehement declaration that Young was innocent, even though the court would have spared his life had he implicated Young, very telling.

As a final note, the massacre was disgusting, but using it to try and portray the LDS church as some sort of bloodthirsty warmongering theocracy is also quite disgusting.

Yes, that also would be disgusting. I never have tried to show the LDS as bloodthirsty. I am LDS.
