Contradictions Between the Book of Mormon and the Bible

There are many serious objections to the claim of Joseph Smith and the LDS church that the Book of Mormon is divinely inspired latter-day scripture supplemental to the Bible. However, none are more significant than the numerous contradictions between Book of Mormon teaching and the Bible. This list is illustrative only, not exhaustive.
1. The Book of Mormon teaches that little children are not capable of sin because they do not have a sinful nature (Moroni 8:8). In contrast, the Bible in Psalm 51:5 clearly teaches that we have sinful nature from birth: "Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me" (NIV). (This does not mean that those who die in infancy are lost.*)
2. The Book of Mormon teaches that the disobedience of Adam and Eve in eating the forbidden fruit was necessary so that they could have children and bring joy to mankind (2 Nephi 2:23-25). In contrast, the Bible specifically declares that Adams transgression was a sinful act of rebellion that unleashed the power of sin and death in the human heart and throughout Gods perfect world (Genesis 3:16-19; Romans 5:12; 8:20-21). There is no Biblical support for the view that Adam and Eve could only fulfill the command to "be fruitful and multiply" (Genesis 1:28) by disobeying Gods command regarding the forbidden fruit (Genesis 2:17). The Book of Mormon teaching that these divine commands are contradictory, and that God expected Adam and Eve to figure out that in reality He wanted them to break the latter command ("of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it") in order to keep the former ("be fruitful and multiply"), has no basis in logic or the Biblical text, and attributes equivocation to God.
3. The Book of Mormon teaches that black skin is a sign of Gods curse, so that white-skinned people are considered morally and spiritually superior to black skinned people (2 Nephi 5:21). In contrast, the Bible teaches that God "made of one blood all nations of men" (Acts 17:26, KJV), that in Christ distinctions of ethnicity, gender and social class are erased (Galatians 3:28), and that God condemns favoritism (James 2:1).
4. The Book of Mormon teaches that, "it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do" (2 Nephi 25:23; see also Moroni 10:32). In contrast, the Bible teaches that apart from Christ we are dead in sin (Ephesians 2:1,5) and unable to do anything to merit forgiveness and eternal life. Salvation is wholly of grace (Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 11:6; Titus 3:5-6), not by grace plus works. Good works are a result, not the basis, of a right relationship with God (Ephesians 2:10).
5. According to the Book of Mormon, about 600 years before Christ, a Nephite prophet predicted that "many plain and precious parts" (1 Nephi 13:26-28) would be removed from the Bible. In contrast, from the Bible it is clear that during His earthly ministry, Jesus himself constantly quoted from the Old Testament Scriptures, and showed full confidence in their completeness and accurate transmission as they had survived down to His time. Jesus declared that "heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away" (Mark 13:31; see also Matthew 5:18), and promised His disciples who were to pen the New Testament that the Holy Ghost "shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you" (John 14:26); Jesus further promised the apostles that they would "bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain" (John 15:16). These promises clearly imply that the fruit of the apostles the New Testament Scriptures and the Christian church would endure.
6. According to a Book of Mormon prophecy (Helaman 14:27), at the time of Christs crucifixion "darkness should cover the face of the whole earth for the space of three days." In contrast, the New Testament gospel accounts declare repeatedly that there was darkness for only three hours while Jesus was on the cross (Matthew 27:45; Mark 15:33; Luke 23:44).
An earlier prophecy in 1 Nephi 19:10 implies the three days of darkness will be more than regional in scope for it says this sign will be "unto those who inhabit the isles of the sea, more especially given unto those who are of the house of Israel." The darkness then would extend over the ocean to the islands and reach as far as Israel in the Middle East.
Book of Mormon references to the fulfillment of this prophecy, however, use wording that could be understood to mean the three days of darkness was only in the Americas, stating that the three days of darkness would be "over the face of the land." (3 Nephi 8:3ff; 10:9). This appears to be the position of the late Mormon General Authority B.H. Roberts in his book Studies of the Book of Mormon, p. 292). If this is the case, then this would resolve the apparent contradiction between the Bible and the Book of Mormon regarding what happened at the time of Christ's death, for we would have 3 hours of darkness in Israel and 3 days of darkness on the American continents. However, this would make the earlier prophecies of 1 Nephi and Helaman internally contradictory with later BOM references, since their phrasing of "the isles of the sea ... those who are of the house of Israel" and "the whole face of the whole earth" is difficult to understand as merely a localized time of darkness.
7. The Book of Mormon people are said to have observed "all things according to the law of Moses (2 Nephi 5:10; 25:24). However, although they are supposed to have been Hebrews, they were descendents of the tribe of Joseph (1 Nephi 5:17) or Manasseh (Alma 10:3), not the tribe of Levi and family line of Aaron, as the Law of Moses dictates (Numbers 3:10; Exodus 29:9; Numbers 18:1-7), so they would not have had a legitimate priesthood.
8. According to the Book of Mormon, there were many high priests serving at the same time (Mosiah 11:11; Alma 13:9-10; 46:6,38; Helaman 3:25) in the New World, among those it describes as Jewish immigrants from ancient Israel who "kept the law of Moses" (e.g., 2 Nephi 25:10; Jacob 4:5; Jarom 1:5). In contrast, it is clear from the Bible that only one individual at a time occupied the office of high priest under the Old Testament dispensation (see, for example Leviticus 21:10; Matthew 26:3; Hebrews 8:6-7). (The mention in Luke 3:2 of "Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests" is not a real exception -- in Christs time Israel was under the domination of the Romans, who intervened to change the high priest at will. That is, this office became a kind of "political football," rather than following the appointment process dictated in the Law of Moses. See John 18:13, which describes Annas as "father-in-law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.")
9. The people described in the Book of Mormon operated multiple temples (Alma 16:13; 23:2; 26:29). This violates the dictates of the Old Testament Scriptures on two counts: First, God commanded Israel to build only one temple to reflect that fact that there is only one true God (Deuteronomy 12:5,13-14; 16:5-6). Second, the one legitimate temple was to be built in Jerusalem (Zion), the location designated by God (The Old Testament is filled with explicit references to God choosing Jerusalem [Zion] as the place where "His name would dwell" in the temple: for example, 1 Kings 8:44,48; 11:13,32,36; 14:21; 2 Kings 21:7; 23:27; 1 Chronicles 28:4; 2 Chronicles 6:6; 7:12,16; Psalm 78:68-69; Isaiah 18:7.
10. The most common biblical terms used to describe the Old Testament priesthood, temple and appointed feasts, are entirely missing from the Book of Mormon. Here are 10 examples of such biblical terms with their frequencies, that never appear once in the Book of Mormon:
"laver" (13 times in Bible)
"incense" (121 times in Bible)
"ark of the covenant" (48 times in Bible)
"sons of Aaron" (97 times in Bible)
"mercy seat" (23 in Bible)
"day of atonement" (21 times in Bible)
"feast of tabernacles" (17 times in Bible)
"passover" (59 times in Bible)
"house of the LORD" (627 in Bible)
"Aaron" this name appears 48 times in the Book of Mormon, but never in reference to the biblical Aaron or the Aaronic priesthood
Conclusion: The contradictions between the Book of Mormon and the Bible constitute a most serious obstacle to accepting the Book of Mormon as Latter-day scripture that is supplemental to the Bible. The Bible came first, not the Book of Mormon. And whereas the Bible is organically linked to the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ by extensive surviving manuscript evidence going back as far as A.D. 125-30, the Book of Mormon is wholly lacking in any such evidences of ancient origin.
Is it not reasonable, therefore, to make the Bible the standard for judging the Book of Mormon, and not the other way around? If we accept the Bible as our "measuring stick" for spiritual truth, the Book of Mormon must be rejected.

I did not write this message but found it worth posting as a reminder that we are all on a path to God.
Thank you, Alamo-Girl for your measured, soothing words that tend to bring us back from our bitterness. Thank you restornu for your private Freepmails and reminding me that we are all tying to be children of God.
To all, please forgive me, I know in my zeal to prove myself right (sin of Pride) I have offended many. I am deeply sorry. My God Bless you all!
THE WAY OF LIFE
Deep in the heart of every person is the intuitive feeling that there must be "a way", a way which is of God and leads to God. This feeling is very strong in children and remains strong until the individual either becomes hardened in gross sin or by the wisdom of this world. But every honest person will admit that at one time in his life he felt an earnest desire to know God and to walk in His way. But as the lusts of the mind or flesh are given in to, there is a dark mist that settles down on the heart which quenches any true breathings after Him. Sometimes, after this darkness has settled on the heart and if the individual is religiously inclined, he may become active in one or other of the ways around us, but his religion is never the religion of Jesus and has its roots in the region of the damned. For the religion of Jesus was to do the will of the Father, but this man's religion is to do his own will in the name of the Father. And these two ways are as opposite as light and darkness.
So we see the foundation of the many ways in the world, each claiming to be of God and in the divine order. They all originate in the fallen and corrupt nature of man which is alienated from God. It is for this reason that they are filled up with hypocrisy and deceit. For it is impossible for fallen man to meddle with the things of God without creating an institution which is only superficially similar to the church of Jesus Christ, but within is filled with wickedness and every evil way. This is the spiritual Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth, which is spoken of in Rev 17:5.
Now the false ways are multitudinous. As there are no bounds to the wicked imaginations of man, so there are no bounds to the number of ways he may invent. For just as a man may be inspired by the Holy Spirit, he may also be inspired by the evil spirit, the arch-enemy of man's soul. And Satan knows that God's holy way is hateful to the sinful mind. So if he can invent many false ways which appeal to the lusts of the flesh, he knows that the deceitfulness of man's heart will do the rest.
Much mankind will flock to these invented ways because they are cleverly designed by the enemy to appeal to the individual's own idea of what religion should be. "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man but the end thereof are the ways of death." Proverbs 14:12. Thus, if a man thinks that a religion should be filled with elegant rites and ceremonies, then he will be drawn to the Catholics, Episcopalians, or the Lutherans. If he feels that religion should round out his social self, then he will be drawn to the Congregationalists, Methodists, Unitarians, etc. Or if he feels that the Bible should play a major role in his religion, he may turn to the Baptists, Presbyterians, Nazarenes, Mennonites, etc. If he thinks that religion should be highly charged with emotionalism and outward manifestations, then he will go to one of the many Pentecostal (tongues) churches. And finally, in these last days, the New Age religion is being offered to the high-minded individual. But whatever one's personal taste may be, Satan has provided a way that is suitable to it and into which one can fit with ease.
A second part of mankind is comprised of those people who either attend no church at all or attend the one of their birth with no regularity. They are too lazy spiritually and too much taken up with the pleasures of this life to be concerned about their latter end. They have some strange and vague notion that they are Christians and hope to enter into heaven, even though their lives are wholly dedicated to the acquisition of worldly possessions and the pursuit of earthly pleasures. Their God is their belly and their end is destruction.
The remainder of mankind who is not given to religion by inclination but rather to godlessness will lean toward humanism, deism, agnosticism, or atheism. This does not mean that they are taken up with gross wickedness. On the contrary, many of them are proud moralists. But they are, one and all, antichrists. They utterly deny the need of a Redeemer and they look upon the blood of Christ as a thing of no value. And since they are by nature opposed to religion and God, they use the fact that there are so many ways, each claiming to be right, to bolster their opinion that there is no true way. But how foolish! To label something false is to confess that there must be a true.
But all of these, religionist and non-religionist alike, have a common denominator, sin in their lives. For though the religionist thinks himself to be holier than the non-religionist and the non-religionist thinks himself to be intellectually superior to the religionist, they are really alike in the sight of God and are both children of hell. One thinks that he will be saved by church membership, another by good works, another by faith, another by accepting Christ as his Savior, another because he has done nothing very wicked, and another may deny that he needs salvation at all, but they are all alike in that they have never departed from sin.
The Serpent has had nearly six thousand years of experience in deceiving mankind. He knows that God's controversy is with sin and that no matter how good we may appear or how kind we may be to others or how many good works we may do or how moral we may be in the eyes of the world we are, nonetheless, children of hell and shall be eternally damned unless we have felt the sin-killing power of God in our hearts to deliver us from the vain spirit and conversation of the world. For it is eternally decreed that we must not love the world, neither the things that are in the world, because the world is at enmity with God. And whosoever shall love the world is an enemy of God.
Now it may happen that one of the above-mentioned deceived may say that he doesn't love the world but that he loves the Lord. But that is nonsense. Who it is that we serve, that is who we love. Jesus plainly tells us that we don't love Him unless we obey His commandments. And He tells us that we are to have no fellowship with the world and to come out from among them and be separate. But these deceived church members do always fellowship with the world and never feel a necessity to separate themselves from it. And the Spirit expressly commands that we be not conformed to the world, but they are completely conformed to it in its fashions, fads, pleasures, politics, etc. Stand a moral agnostic side by side with one of these church members and there is not one speck of difference between them. So we see that they pay a lip service to God but by their lives they deny Him.
The Lord tells us that there are only two ways, although to the untrained eye there may appear to be many. He tells us of a broad way, one that allows much liberty and freedom of movement to its travelers. The gate that leads to this way is very wide, so that anybody can get through it without giving up a thing and start down that way toward its ultimate goal, eternal destruction. Now our Lord assures us that practically everyone chooses that way, that it is thronged with multitudes of people who are happily deceived. It is such an easy and comfortable way and filled with all manner of pleasures and earthly enjoyments. But, alas! How sad the end.
The other way sharply contrasts with the first. There is no outward beauty in it that it should be desired by the fallen nature of man. It is lowly and despised and starkly plain. This way is fraught with all manner of perils and hardships. Each day its weary travelers must pick up their crosses and follow in the bloodstained footsteps of their crucified Lord. It is rugged and, oh, so narrow. Unlike the broad way which is downhill and easy, this path is all uphill with dangerous precipices and chasms all about.
It is a lonely path. The pilgrims in this way are few, indeed. For though every person born into the world comes to its gates, few there be that enter in. Day by day, as these weary pilgrims toil upward toward their goal, they must endure the taunts and insults, and even thrown stones, from those that are strolling down the broad way, because sinners rage when they observe their sobriety and gravity and the way that they shun the world and its pleasures.
The gate that leads to this narrow way is very, very strait. One can carry nothing of this old life through it. If a man desires to walk in the way that leads to eternal life, he must first lay aside everything and then squeeze through the gate into the narrow way. It is here that the multitudes stumble. They are not willing to let loose of their sinful pleasures. They would willingly have their sin and their heaven, too.
This gate is the gate of repentance and this way is the highway of holiness. No unclean thing can pass over it. And there is no other road to heaven, as all will discover in the end. Though millions profess the name of Christ, it is all in vain. In life they are no different from anyone else. They enjoy the same sports, the same games, the same movies, the same TV, they dress in the same vulgar way as any unbeliever. The inescapable fact is that they are in the same broad way. Let them profess what they will, they are known by their fruits. They are lost and undone, without God and without hope.
Repentance is one of the most pungent words in the Bible. Few understand it, and fewer still have experienced it. It is not reformation, because a man may reform without any desires after God. Many drunks and dissolute persons have reformed without being one whit more spiritual for having done so. But reformation is similar to repentance, and by understanding reformation we may understand repentance.
Reformation is the complete change of one's life style and habits so as to conform to society's code of conduct and ethics. Repentance is the complete change of one's life style and habits so as to conform to God's code of conduct and ethics. They are similar, and yet they are as different as night and day. For, in reality, the repentant person is no more acceptable to society than the dissolute one. And the reason is clear. The world is at enmity with God and all of His followers.
To be more specific, to repent is to turn your back on every evil way and every worldly pleasure and to turn your face toward God, to walk in His holy way and to be obedient to His heavenly commands. It is no less than the losing of your own life. For when one repents, he renounces his own desires, plans, wants, ideas, religion, philosophies, politics, and lusts. In short, he loses his own life and picks up his cross and follows after Jesus. Man, in the fall, can never be acceptable in God's sight because his heart and will are rebellious and stubborn. Thus, his works are equally unacceptable because they rise out of a rebellious nature. For this reason, the repentance must go just as deep as the fall. But there is no more difficult undertaking in all the world. For true repentance is so deep and so radical and so thorough that man alone can never accomplish it. Repentance is a gift of God to the hungering, panting soul. It is never granted to the half-hearted. So, man's work is to yield himself to the Lord, body, soul, and spirit, to be His forever, and God will work the true repentance in the heart to the converting of the soul and the making of a new creature in Christ Jesus.
Now the new creature is not just a reformed old creature. It is what it says. A new creature in Christ Jesus. Old things pass away, indeed. All things really do become new. Otherwise, we could never stay in the narrow way. This new creature finds a hatred in his heart for every sinful thing and a love for true righteousness and holiness. He delights to do the will of the Father and abhors the vain spirit and conversation of the world. He shuns the wicked fashions of dress, the fads of this evil world, and all of its deluding pleasures, knowing that they come from the lusts. His conversation is in heaven and his spirit soars above the pollutions of this wicked generation.
There's some connection that's missing here. How is stating a logical conclusion about the American Indians being Jewish, *hurling insults at people*? Or do you consider it insulting to call Indians *Jews* or vice versa?
If He had been murdered under color of law by a sword instead of a cross, would you have a sword hanging on your wall?
Since you claim to be an all-knowing lawyer type I guess I'll defer to you since you've been to my synagogue and apparently know that all of us are lukewarm. Thank you very much. Carry on with your thread monitoring.
Didn't dispute the claim about Indians being Jewish. Whether they are or not affects me not. Just pasted part of the post I was offended by. Should have probably pasted the whole thing.
St. Paul says that he "determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified" and asks that "may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ."
This the devil cannot take from you: the cross of Christ. For you have been baptized into this cross. You eat that mangled body and you drink that spilled blood. You sit at the feet of the wooden altar and you hear the words, "Father, forgive them."
Don't listen to anyone who tries to tell you that this event isn't the most important event in the history of eternity. Don't listen to anyone who would lift another doctrine beside this sweet gift of our most merciful God. The cross is our reality - in baptism, in communion, in absolution. This death is our life, and there is no other.
"I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me."
After reading your it reminds of one of my favorit hymns
There is a green hill far away,
Outside a city wall,
Where the dear Lord was crucified,
Who died to save us all.
O dearly, dearly, has He loved,
And we must love Him, too,
And trust in His redeeming blood,
And try His works to do.
We may not know, we cannot tell,
What pains He had to bear;
But we believe it was for us
He hung and suffered there.
He died that we might be forgiven,
He died to make us good,
That we might go at last to Heavn,
Saved by His precious blood.
There was no other good enough
To pay the price of sin;
He only could unlock the gate
Of heaven and let us in.
O dearly, dearly has He loved,
And we must love Him, too,
And trust in His redeeming blood,
And try His works to do.
The first Hymn I heard in my life in a church which was the "Church of the Nazarene!" I was about 5 years old
Was "Onward Christian Soldier!"
http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/o/n/onwardcs.htm
a little trivia
This hymn is sung at the end of the 1942 Academy Award-winning movie, Mrs. Miniver
My how far removed has Academy Award become!
Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your testimony and prayer and this message with us! May God every bless you, dear colorcountry!
One thing I abhor, is the no-talent rock bands and songs often performed in non-traditional Christian Churches. I don't mind the style as long as it is performed and sung well. How could we send worship unto the lord that is shoddy?
One of my favorite hymns is "How Great Thou Art."
I heard it sung in a Church Service for the first time after many years away from Mormon Church...It moved me to tears and raised bumps on my arms. Some of the old hymns are fabulous.
I agree me personally I don't care for Rock in general and certainly not in doing hymns which is a puzzle to me why someone thinks bluegenes honor the Lord, oh how I loath compulsive diversity!
Now this has nothing to do with a soul who's only wardrobe is bluegenes!
The Genreal Authorites have given set guildlines in how one should conduct themselves in Church for it is a place of reverances Sunday was set aside for the Worship of the Lord Jesus Christ!
Which includes all other activities during the week the reverance should be maintain!
Well, just like in all things. Do you do it just because the "General Authority" says?...then it is a sin of pride.
Do you dress in your very best, because you love the lord and that is the way in which you show respect...then it is true worship.
If you are a ditch digger and covered with mud, you can truly worship him. But if you go to church in jeans because you are more comfortable or because you're too lazy to clean yourself, and all you think about is what is best for you, then it is NOT worship.
Well, just like in all things. Do you do it just because the "General Authority" says?...then it is a sin of pride.
Well if you saw how I dress when I go to church it sure is a few
notches below of where I use to be in life, but it don't manner even sack cloth I love going to Church!
It is sad that how touchy the world has grown to the point one can't even have an discussion with out incrimination, faultfinding etc. which is not of the Lord!
Just like some have to learn how to fish, others need a little guidance when religion is all new to them, in many homes they never even heard not attended church, in our permissive world today others have to be remind where they are at!
Is not church in general is a work in progress!
Not everyone is born in the Church, nor know there is street dress and there is a reverance clothes!
Is is not the price tag it is the modesty!
What I have witness in the Lord Church is that those who follow the Lord their tongue is still...
I find when I when I am possession of those Sugary Darts, I am no longer walking with the Lord I profess!
In all humility I must find my way back to the arms of my Savior
This is one of the hardess lesson I have to learn, yet it is one the quailities I love about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints...
It was for the first time I followship in a church where when the Holy Spirit was present those who would murmur fell on death ears!
For the first time in my life I was in a camp where the Spirit of the Lord permeated and not the opposition who goats an ungodly behavior!
I certainly took no personal offense. I pray I gave none.
You, dear Eccles, are a perfect gentleman.
I agree that was a beautiful post CC and it was much appreciated!:)
Are there Mormon concordances? I've had this conversation about that Mormon scripture before, with a Mormon, with an open book of Mormon, of which I no longer own. Scared to. There's got to be an equivalent Mormon concordance to Strong's -- you tell me. I'd reference Thomas and Jesus' hands.
