When and where in the past couple of thousand years or so was there a wrath of God against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men"?

Although it sounds grand, your fleeting generalization is factually wrong.

Read The Fathers, Harley, all of them. And when you are done, read the Orthodox service books for the entire Liturgical year. There you'll find "the great commentaries of the Orthodox Church"! You'll find they are far more profound and inspired than the thin gruel of the angry men of the Reformation, men who presumed to change the canon of scripture to fit their own anti-Roman spin on The Faith. You'll also find that there were more Fathers who wrote on more subjects, and rather more spiritually in my opinion, than simply Blessed Augustine.
