Lk 1:46-56
# Douay-Rheims Vulgate
46 And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord. et ait Maria magnificat anima mea Dominum
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. et exultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo
48 Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generationes
49 Because he that is mighty hath done great things to me: and holy is his name. quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est et sanctum nomen eius
50 And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him. et misericordia eius in progenies et progenies timentibus eum
51 He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. fecit potentiam in brachio suo dispersit superbos mente cordis sui
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble. deposuit potentes de sede et exaltavit humiles
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. esurientes implevit bonis et divites dimisit inanes
54 He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy. suscepit Israhel puerum suum memorari misericordiae
55 As he spoke to our fathers: to Abraham and to his seed for ever. sicut locutus est ad patres nostros Abraham et semini eius in saecula
56 And Mary abode with her about three months. And she returned to her own house. mansit autem Maria cum illa quasi mensibus tribus et reversa est in domum suam

Thanks for the Christmas wishes, Salvation! I'm celebrating even now by hanging on Christian TV and PBS with all their wonderful Christmas concerts. I've also gone to all the Christmas pageants at church, esp. the lovely children's pageant. I celebrate with my extended family with Christmas eve dinner, Christmas afternoon visitations, and Christmas evening dinner and gift exchanges.

Feliz Navidad to all FReepers reading this thread!

Meditation
Luke 1:46-56

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. (Luke 1:46-47)

So begins Mary’s beautiful proclamation of the faithfulness of God through all generations. You can almost picture Mary dropping to her knees in reverence, or standing with her hands raised in praise, or maybe even dancing merrily around Elizabeth’s home as she sang her song of joy to the Lord. The point is that, just as she said, Mary’s entire being—her spirit, soul, and body—was fully engaged as she gave thanks to her Father in heaven.

It makes sense, doesn’t it, that Mary’s whole being would be involved in giving praise and worship to God? First, her mind began to recall all the wonders God had done throughout the ages—his mighty deeds, his great mercy to those who fear him, his faithfulness to Abraham and his descendents. As she recalled these great events and used her imagination to picture them, her spirit naturally began to rejoice and exalt in worship. And this exaltation caused a song of praise to burst forth from her lips, a smile to shine on her face, and her hands to rise in gratitude and worship.

The lesson for us today? Whenever we attend Mass or set aside time for daily prayer, it is crucial that we get our whole person—body, soul, and spirit—to work together in harmony. By taking authority over the posture of our bodies and the thoughts going through our minds, we can put our spirits in the right position to receive revelation from the Lord and to worship him in love.

Reclining on the sofa may be a good posture for watching television, but it’s not always the best way to read our Scriptures! We would probably do better in a firm chair, or at a desk, where we can avail ourselves of study materials or write down in a prayer journal what we feel the Lord is saying to us. Similarly, singing a few Christmas carols as we go through the day can engage our minds and voices in a spirit of worship. Who knows? We might end up dancing for joy, just as Mary did!

“I praise you, Lord, for you have done great things for me. Holy is your name! All glory to you, Lord, for keeping your promises to your church. From this day forward, I will count myself blessed.”

"O MOTHER OF THE WORD INCARNATE"

"My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord." —Luke 1:46

Most Bible scholars reckon that Mary was in her teenage years when she uttered her Magnificat (Lk 1:46-55). Catholic tradition holds that Mary was presented in the Temple at a young age and was raised by holy guardians who reared her and taught her the Scriptures. The feast of the Presentation of Mary on November 21, the patronal feast of Presentation Ministries, preserves and celebrates this tradition.

Mary heard the word of God and kept it, that is, obeyed it (Lk 8:21). Mary conceived the Word of God (Jn 1:1, 14) in her womb and kept It, that is, guarded It. Mary treasured the Word of God and kept it, that is, contemplated it (Lk 2:19).

Mary's Magnificat flowed from the center of her "being" (Lk 1:46). Her words in the Magnificat are a constant quotation of Scripture. While carrying the Word of God in her womb, she also carried the Word of God in her heart and soul, and that word poured forth readily from her in the words of her Magnificat. Though a teenager, she had spent a lifetime in God's Word, and so she spoke from the abundance of her heart (Lk 6:45), and what was in her heart was the Word of God.

During these final days of Advent, let us prepare for the Christmas coming of Jesus, the Word of God, as Mary did: by immersing ourselves in Scripture. Devour God's Word (Jer 15:16) to prepare to meet the incarnate Word this Christmas.

Prayer: Father, may I desire Your word more than Christmas presents (Ps 119:72).
Promise: "His mercy is from age to age on those who fear Him." —Lk 1:50
Praise: "O King of all the nations, the only Joy of every human heart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man, come and save the creature You fashioned from the dust."
