Could this be the beginning of a Protestant/Catholic consensus on justification, where Catholics recognize that the Protestant idea of sola fide refers to the transactional component of justification, whereas the Catholic idea of justification sees it as a life-long process including sanctification?

The Biblical term encompasses both concepts. It is clear that Paul uses the term differently than James. Paul is concerned with legalists who said you must do so and so to be saved; whereas James is concerned with antinomians who figured they were saved, so it didn't matter what the heck they did. Both are right, and neither really contradicts the other. But they use the word with subtle differences.
