My understanding of the IC is that the Lord in His Grace preserved Mary from the stain of original sin (i.e. the consequences of the Fall of Man). Combine that with the widespread belief that she was endowed with the grace to live a life without sin and we have someone who had no need of a Savior on a cross.

It was by the merits of her Son's Passion, Death, and Resurrection that she was preserved without sin. God applied them to her without any problem, since He is eternal, and omnipotent.

Could He then have also applied them to everyone else and spared his Son the Cross?
