It is similar to those in the early Church who were allowed to recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit in certain books. Was the early Church also able to recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit in certain Church teachings and practices? When did the Church loose this ability?

That's a much more nebulous concept than answering whether the Gospel of Thomas is inspired or not.

It was a gift needed to recognize the Canon. Once the Canon was established the need for the gift was no more. Though it is interesting that even after 2000 years there continues to be near universal acceptance among Christians of the contents of the NT.
Also interesting is the fact that the cults & the modernists first line of attach is on the Scriptures - either creating their own or denying their inspiration.
