Any answer from Vargas?
Any retraction from the WaPo?
(I'm not holding my breath here, but I am curious.)
Go to the Catholic Exchange website and backtrack to the first two installments, published six months ago, I think. At the end of the second one there's the beginnings of a response from the Post--basically trying to weasel out of it, blame it on Martin Marty (who had not even heard of it before the author of this expose contacted him--so the WaPo author lied about his contact with Martin Marty), and then finally admitting that he consulted several websites, thought the story of roaming priest-executioners was true, intended to check it out but never really did. He admits that one of his sources was Wikipedia.
And a homeschooling mother does the nitty-gritty research that this journalist could have done but was too lazy to do. And he gets published in one of the supposedly premier American newspapers. The vaunted Old Media, doing its "research" on the Web that it despises, doing it sloppily and stupidly, and then lying about it--where's Patrick Fitzgerald when we need him??
