Sin means "missing the mark." Which we all do, ALL of us...an alcoholic is in no worse position than the rest. Why do you continue to use him as an example?
The apostles were not asked to have faith that Jesus lived. They KNEW he lived...they were asked to have the saving faith in that he was the SAVIOR. You have to recognize you NEED a Savior before you recognize you HAVE a Savior and that HE IS YOUR SAVIOR. First step: is recognize your sin and that you're helpless. Second step: Hate your sin (repent). Third Step: accept your Savior....or perhaps those are all part of one step, having faith in Christ.
The thief on the cross had faith in Christ that he would save him from his sin, and he admitted he sinned. It was not baptism that saved him. It was recognizing (faith) in the Savior...."this day you will be with me in heaven."
