Well, maybe they have edible bibles? I remember seeing a liquor flask made in the shape of a book, so one could address the need for water in this fashion as well.

Some reporter on the news tonight said bibles were the second most requested item, right after water. Of course, this request was from people who are now at the Astrodome, so I think they are getting food now.

To whom how. Rabelais' Friar Jean, for example, had his flask in place of a religious book, and called it "vademecum" - thus the idea is not in the least new and has a long pedigree. I, for one, would welcome a book-shaped flask of something fortifying.

Well, to tell the truth, I don't even like the whiskies, either blended or single malt, preferring to raise my spirituality to 86+proof blood level using good old brandies, 10-20 years old and better. Why, it is so spiritually uplifting that I even remember speaking in tongues on occasion. What better could one ask for?

I just checked the Gideons website to see what they were doing to get Bibles to refugees, but their "Hurricane Katrina" link is broken.

Greg Griffith is an orthodox (evangelical, I believe) Episcopalian who is not far away in Jackson. He is also the maintainer of several of the Stand Firm in Faith websites (WV, LA, AL, MS), author of all, and the blogger of Southern Anglican. (The links to all these are on the page in my tagline.)

I do not know specifically where the Bibles will go, and I do not have an e-mail address, but you can click through to Southern Anglican and ask him directly.
