There are no people walking around in the New Testament asking each other, "when did you git saved?" Perhaps someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but there were probably no people who held that belief before the 1800's, and I'll bet that one is an American Invention.

Peter certainly treats the idea of having been saved as a 'fait accompli' ...
1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Quester, there is nothing here, that says they have been saved, nor that they have received a guarantee of salvation. In fact, St. Peter is quoting the old testament here, entirely. The Holy nation and royal priesthood is from Exodus 19:6 where God tells the people of Israel, though all the earth is His, "you shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation." This does not mean that the Israelites have all received a guarantee of salvation, rather it means that they have been set apart by God as a Holy nation to worship God. Same as are we, as Peter points out.

"10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. (1 Peter 2:10)

Again, this says nothing about a guarantee of salvation, it continues upon the theme and points out that God has been merciful to us.
