Received this from cpforlife's niece yesterday.
I am writing to let you know that our family is safe and we were not seriously effected by hurricane Katrina. My uncle remains without electricity, which means no Internet. He hopes everyone on-line is doing well. He said he will rejoin his on-line family on Free Republic as soon as we have power. Thanks and God Bless.

I guess where he is located may make a difference. Maybe he is South of the Lake and not North...
Hopefully power will be restored shortly...

An update: Askel arrived at my apartment in Baton Rouge at sunrise on Monday. We put in a very long day, driving all the way back to her apartment and to my and my parents' homes, and my office, to retrieve belongings and put things in order. We stayed in the city till sundown, and attracted plenty of interrest from the vigilant but polite authorities as we made our way out of the area. Back in BR, we had dinner and several well-deserved drinks. We then loaded Askel's van with her dog and the stuff I rescued from her place last week, and about midnight Askel was on her way back to her Lafayette layover. She returned to Tulsa yesterday, swearing her intent to return to NOLA as soon as conditions permit.

Wonderful news! I'm glad to hear that Askel's dog was found. I am guessing that Askel's apartment did not get flooded. How were your home and office? Do you or Askel have any idea when conditions will permit your return?

Yes, it was a touching reunion, and I'm not being ironic. Askel can be such a softie. The dog and I had close to a week to bond -- we were brothers in adversity. We shared the same food (OK, I didn't eat the dog food, but he had his share of my gumbo, canned tuna, hamburger, lamb chops, and hard boiled eggs), we slept together, we evacuated to BR together, and twice I stripped down and took him into the shower with me to clean him off. So while it was a great joy to put the leash in Askel's hand, in a hard to describe way it was also difficult: once you adjust yourself to the role of someone's critical caregiver it's not so easy to just walk away when your're relived of the duty.
Askel's apt. did not flood (but frankly, if it had, could anyone tell? ;-) ), and word is, as I expected, that unflooded portions of the city will start getting power quite soon. My home also did not flood -- though it came close, but at the moment I have somewhat more attic ventilation than I really need. About a dozen or so roof slates have been lost, opening a gap of about 4 ft. by 6 inches. This is going to admit a lot of water, so I need a temporary fix until I can get an insurance adjustment and a roofer -- a project that will take months, I fear. The homes of my parents and one of my sisters had a lot of water, and restoration there will be lengthy. My parents will move into a high-rise condo owned by an uncle of mine; my sister & famiglia will move in with me. My office is OK.

Great news for you both, and Askel's critter!
Even better that many of your belongings did not get flooded.
Thanks so much for keeping us posted! And we're still keeping you in our prayers.

Hello my fellow Freepers!
I'm doing good...still no electric -- bought a generator day before storm so I have lights fans and running water via great well water.
Here is a brief update: We are blessed.
All family is OK - parents house and my house no damage. Parents went to Atlanta to stay w my brother for 2 weeks and are now w my sister 15 miles away w power. I stayed home to start clearing areas around houses. Dozens of trees all over our property.
I've been cutting/clearing trees for days and decided to take a break and am logging on at the library.
One cousin and her husband lived on beach of Bay St. Louis-- only the slab remains but they got out OK and are well.
We thank God we are so blessed to have faired so well. We live 1 hour North of New Orleans in Abita Springs. I heard it was a Category 3 well north of us.
As the storm passed I watched massive Oak trees etc uproot and fall all around us.
One of the largest pines on our land fell toward my dad's office window the top branches gently landed on the roof. The tree top was up against the windows but not one broke. The biggest branch was on a window where he has a poster of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We took that as sign.
God IS Sovereign
