As this piece points out, the churches where you are least likely to hear Scripture read during services are often those where the authority and teaching of Scripture are most emphasized, particularly evangelical churches. Strange, but true. And the writers experience is that even Anglican evangelical churches often read Scripture in their worship less.
My personal experience as one with a evangelical/fundamentalist background? My current REC church is the first of my church homes where Scripture is regularly read during services outside the context of the sermon.
I think this is one way is which evangelical-style worship impoverishes itself. As Ive experienced first hand, there is a power to formally reading the raw word of God in worship. I'd much rather sit and listen to the reading of Scripture than sing one more praise and worship song. And Scripture reading is a prominent feature of Jewish and Christian worship through the centuries. Why cut oneself off from that?
Yes, I greatly value the role of Lector, of reading the Scripture lessons aloud during services.
My reading duties begin this Sunday.
Which one is the woman?
Great post. Unfortunately all too true.
Oh yeah, that's the meal. A full helping of smarm with a side of syrupy-sweet, non-judgmental happiness!
Plus the entire Eucharistic Prayer consists of Scripture verses, plus the Our Father, plus the "I am not worthy to receive you", plus "Peace be with you", -- outside of the homily, which is supposed to elucidate the readings, and the Creed, the Catholic Mass is all scripture.
"actual" as in the real thing - is a bit of a stretch -
but you knew that -
thats why Ohenry was created I suspect - so some could claim how extreme the eeeevil arminians are
fact is, whoever is perpetrating this nonsensical retread game, with stereotypes to the extreme, ought to spend some serious time praying about the deception theyre putting forth in false witness
your nonsense is transparent - and I have to say Im surprised - youre usually above this kind of thing ;-P
smilely inserted at marlowes suggestion
what denomination
Can you give us all an example of preaching the gospel in action?
BTW the principle complaint here seems to be that there is too much in the way of preaching and too little in the way of an Alexander Scoursby approach to Bible reading in the churches.
Now you seem to be complaing that the the pastor ought to Preach the Gospel. Well we all seem to have our own preferences in this regard and as far as I can tell none of them are particularly scriptural. So, what should the church do that you think will satisfy all the malcontents on this thread.
Alexander Scoursby
he did have a lovely voice ;-P
And you know that this freeper is an ACTUAL Arminian because....?
Did????
Is that a ghost in my CD player?
* Try the Christian Catholic Church in your town.
The Liturgy of the Mass is Scripture in action.
At our Mass/Liturrgy/Service we redeemed Christians, in our worship of God, gather with Jesus at the altar and offer to God the Perfect Sacrifice of the New Covenant and then participate in the Heavenly Banquet where we consume the Body and Blood, Soul and divinity, of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who instructed and Commanded us us to Worship God as we have for 2000 years.
It is instructive that Jesus spoke about the New Covenant only at the Last Supper/First Mass, no?
It was an independent "holiness" now called a "worship center"
with no affiliation. Here's how bad it was: the pastor's own kids had never been taught simple Bible stories.

gmta...see post 73. Ya beat me to it :)
Haven't you read that there are "none that seeketh"?
We seek to sing, read, pray and preach Scripture.
Sounds just like my evangelical Church. You should come visit sometime. I'll treat you to an espresso after the service. :-)

mr Scourby has left the building
Bummer. I was kinda hoping he could read "the Message."
well - fwiw - our holiness church raises much prayer during the service - so maybe the impression youve got isnt consistent with the whole - my kids attended Catholic School until 9th grade, and have a wonderful rounded view of Christianity
