The Rev. William Klock: "A Fading Splendor and a Shining Hope"
From the Rev. William Klock of Christ Church REC in Oregon, we have the fine sermon, A Fading Splendor and a Shining Hope, which is based on the readings for Trinity 12 in the 1928 BCP, 2 Corinthians 3:4-9 and St. Mark 7:31-37. This sermon has several good points, one of which that impressed me being this one:
Even greater, the Christian priesthood is a broader priesthood. In the Old Testament, God called on the tribe of Levi to be the priesthood and the role of serving as mediator between a holy God and sinful men was theirs only. In the New Covenant God calls all of his people to be priests. There is no longer a need for a mediator between God and man because Christ came and took that position himself. Now, through Christ, every Christian, man and woman, can approach God directly. But that also means that every one of us is called to that role of ministry. No one in the Church can look to the ?professional? priest or minister and say, ?That?s the man God has commission to do his work. I don?t have to do it.? Every one of us is now called to share God?s message of grace.
Indeed, this means that each of us is called to share his or her spiritual gifts with the rest of the Body of Christ; we are not, generally speaking, to sit back and let others do all the work of the Church. Each of us has a role to play in the Church, and our failure to do so makes it harder for the rest of the Body. May the Lord help each of us to best use our time and talents to the furthering of His Kingdom. And by all means, please read all of this excellent sermon.
