The Maronites record that St. John taught at Ephesus that the Blessed Mother was to be remembered and celebrated in August at the harvest of the grapes. From that many of the Eastern churches had the custom of blessing grapes at Dormition/Assumption and distributing them to the faithful after the Liturgy.

Thanks. I thought harvest might have something to do with it, but grapes ripen a month or so later here.
