But the encyclical itself speaks of Virgin Mary's death, albeit not pointedly, even though, of course, "dormition" is the proper term when referring to death of a saint. Do you consider the Orthodox icon showing Christ comforting Mary's separated soul, -- and hence Mary in the state of death, -- incompatible with the dogma of the Assumpion?
The dogma permits a wide presentation of the truth, and the current Byzantine iconic depiction of the Dormition is absolutely true with a capital "T" theologically. But does it represent facts as a Western historian understands them? That is a different question entirely. The same can be said for Mannerist paintings of the Assumption.
