O Christ Hear Us! [Diocese of Fort Worth appeals to Panel of Reference]
a worker in the vineyard ^ | 7/25/2005 | The Rev. Lee Nelson

"The Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth has appealed to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Panel of Reference for assistance in our dispute with the Episcopal Church in the United States over the ordination of women to the priesthood and episcopate. The Bishop and Standing Committee of the Diocese made the appeal on July 11, 2005, in objection to the actions of the 1997 General Convention that made the ordination of women priests mandatory in every diocese, while the Anglican Communion seeks to maintain an “open process of reception” on this issue."

All relevant documents can be found here.

Finally, an appeal to the Panel of Reference, and from my diocese! This is very good news indeed.

What about what is written in the Bible?
Or doesn't that count?

1 Timothy 2:9
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
2:10
But * (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
2:11
Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
2:12
But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
2:13
For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
2:14
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
2:15
Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

The commandment against women being priests:
(From the King James Bible)
1 Corinthians 14

14:32
And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the
prophets.

14:33
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as
in all churches of the saints.

14:34
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not
permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be
under obedience, as also saith the law.

14:35

And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their
husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in
the church.

14:36
What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto
you only?

14:37

If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual,
let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto
you are the commandments of the Lord

Matthew 5:1-48

17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.

18 Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.

19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 18.
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will
build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail
against it.

It is something I wish our diocese had thought of doing. I don't know, maybe Bishop Stanton *is* thinking about it.

This reminds me of something. Several years ago (1991?), one of the Arlington churches in the Fort Worth Diocese petitioned and is now Roman Catholic using the Anglican Rite. I don't remember what all happened to precipitate the change, but I do remember it was a big deal as the church retained the property, not the diocese.

Hmm, I will have to look it up, but I think it was St Mary's, over on Davis St.

Interesting. The Dennis Canon had been passed before this. Hm...
