Here is Pope Benedict XVI at his best, speaking the patristic language of the East.
In the Maronite (Eastern Catholic) liturgy, as the gifts are being brought up to the priest, we chant .....
Halleluia!
I Myself am Bread of Life, the Lord declared
from on high I came to earth to bring the world
Life from the Father
True Word without Flesh and like a grain of the finest wheat.
Mary's womb became for me a fertile garden,
Now priests carry me aloft up to the altar
Halleluia. Accept our offering.
What a poetic visual!
And right after the Consecration in the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostomos, we chant:
"It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Word. We magnify you, the true Theotokos."
Its much nicer in Greek! :)
Thanks for the ping, BUMP.
