Would we elect as bishop someone who was openly involved in a wife swapping ring, or a single man who had fathered children out of wedlock?

I don't know about the first, but the bishop with the illegitimate child was Catholic, as I recall.

I was speaking of Episcopalians. Any child father by a Catholic priest would technically be illegitimate. In the Episcopal church, priests are allowed to marry, but sexual misconduct is the end of one's career, repentant or not. I personally know of 2 good priests on the fast track to becoming bishop, who fell off the face of the planet after an affair outside of their marriage.
