Similar terms, different concepts. Mary is a creature, the Mormons' "Heavenly Mother" is a god they worship.

Mormons believe in exaultation(sp) of humans as Mary is an exaulted who has all kinds of powers in Heaven. Very very very similar. A female figure to whom "Christians" should pray. Almost identical actually.

Mormons believe that father God and Mary had Jesus as a result of sexual intercourse. I think this teaching is in the Doctrines and Covenants. They also believe that God was once a man and that we can become gods. There is nothing in Catholic teaching that even approaches these heresies. Mary is honored because of her yes to God and for being the mother of our savior. She is not considered a goddess or part of the Trinity. In Mary we see all the promises of God's grace fullfilled. The same promises that we one day hope to share in.

She's really much more similar to Krishna's "wife" than to Jesus Mother.

I know, I know ~ the Mormons'll catch that comment and come in here with ball bats, but that's not the only Eastern element readily discovered in Mormonism.

Interestingly enough this evening I was watching a cable TV travel show about Petra. They had stone blocks where they marked holy spots, and which they seemed to worship. They also had tall stones they worshiped the same way.

These blocks carried the faint outline of a human face carved on them.

Many of them are very, very ancient and predate everything Islamic, Christian or Jewish in the area.

So, what are they?

Roughly they meet the standard for a "seitstone", frequently prepared in a similar manner in Lapland, and used in shamanistic ritual. The very same religious practice was followed by the ancient Sumerian's who first settled Mesopotamia hundreds of miles to the East.

Although the Christians and Muslims destroyed almost all ancient pagan god statues and places of worship, they left these chunks of rock alone.

All of which seems rather divorced from this thread, but the narrator had an interesting thought ~ he said some analysts have proposed that these very rocks are the origin of Jesus' reference to the Church as a "rock".

That gives us a Biblical reference point, and a reason to return to our worship of blocks of stone with vague outlines of faces ~ which may well be the reason these particular stones were never destroyed by religious reformationists.

At the same time we can see how specious the structure of this kind of argument is when applied to the special place of Mary in Messianic prophesy.

It's probably best to not depend on "tradition" and "authority" and simply return to the Scriptures and note that Mary definitely stands out from everyone but John the Baptist and Jesus ~ her birth was prophesied.
