You and I could certainly pray directly to God alone. Most certainly we could. But neither you or I or anyone else have the words to describe heaven. Likewise none of us wallowing here in sin can adequately express the longings of our souls when we are shrouded by the flesh. By petitioning Mary (and the saints) to assist us in our prayers, the wants and needs and sorrows and joys of our souls are clearly expressed before the Heavenly Father.
Scripture indicates that this is the ministry of the Holy Spirit ...
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

We are usually told there is but one mediator, Christ, when we mention asking saints for help with our prayers. Thank you for showing that there is indeed, Scripturally, a difference between mediation and intercession.
