Apparently It's True (Levada to be head of CDF?)

It appears, based on very reliable sources, that indeed Archbishop William Levada of San Francisco is going to be appointed the new Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

This is not good news. Archbishop Levada is the prelate who compromised with the city of San Francisco over the city’s demands that Catholic Charities and other Church organizations provide “domestic partner” benefits to employees. His archdiocese is also a mess with dissenting priests, homosexual activists running all over the place, the University of San Francisco trampling the faith, and more.

I’m really very surprised by this. I would have thought that Pope Benedict would have seen this for what it was, especially considering his close association with Father Fessio, who had been in San Francisco for many years.

Maybe he sees something we don’t. I hope.

Wasn't it the Cheshire Cat who said something like "A word means what I want it to mean"? His picture should be printed on press cards!

LOL! Yes, indeed.

From the diocese web site, it sounds like they're trident.

BTW - I attended mass at St.Mary's cathedral the other week, and was surprised and delighted at how liturgically conservative it was.

You're right! Thank you --

What would/should a good priest do if someone confessed something so horrendous to him like abusing a child? What about the need to protect the community?

Still can't do it. The penitent is not confessing to the priest as an individual; he is confessing to the priest who stands in the place of Christ and the Church.

The priest can make absolution conditional on the penitent going to the police, but he cannot do so himself.

Under any circumstances, even if he himself is under threat.

Old St. Mary's or Levada's new pagan abomination?

The PA. However, I think it predates Levada. And as PAs go, it's only about half-bad.

Levada is Mahony without the cunning and charm. He is a mean man, loathed by liberals, conservatives and trads alike. He is part of Mahony's cabal in California - McGrath, Ryan, Steinbock and Brom among others. My disgust for him is based on personal experience as well as what is mentioned below.

Levada invited Chinese commie schismatic priests to minister in his parishes. He was utterly clueless in dealing with outraged parishoners in the Santa Rosa sex scandal. He was oblivious to their anger.

He campaigned AGAINST anti-gay legislation. I believe there were some other moral issues where he remained ambiguous. I can't recall the specifics right now.

He BANNED the Tridentine from his diocese for many years. I understand there was one recent Tridentine at St. Peter and Paul so he may be feeling some heat from Vigneron in Oakland next door. He is a politician who does what is best to advance himself. Lately he's been pretending to be the conservative he is NOT.

He is notorious for ignoring parishoner complaints and concerns within his archdiocese. He has worked to suppress the explosive sexual scandals simmering under the surface. As was mentioned earlier, he campaigns for the one world religion crowd. His pagan temple, er, cathedral is an abomination. I understand there are bizarre animal-like creatures and strange details thoughout. The devil is in the details, literally.

If Pope Benedict puts this wolf in sheep's clothing at the head of CDF we may as well rename him Pope Benedict Arnold.

Hah! You can't fool us. That's not a Cathedral ... It's the Imperial Throne Room from the next Star Wars movie!

The Cathedral was completed in 1970, Levada became archbishop in 1995. Whatever its shortcomings, they are not his fault. There is a monthly trident at Sts P&P, and a weekly at St. Patrick's.

The Latin Novus Ordo is not the same as the Tridentine. A few years ago he refused the Tridentine. Since Vigneron moved in next door Levada's behavior has taken a sharp turn towards the right. He may be allowing the TM in his diocese now but I guarantee you it is not for love of the Mass or Catholicism.

I believe the website states Levada consecrated the new cathedral in 96. Regardless, he is in charge now. He chose not to redo it all these years.

Don't defend Levada. He is neither Catholic nor a man of God.

AP now reporting:

Pope Benedict XVI is sounding out top Vatican cardinals on filling his old job as the Vatican’s chief guardian of doctrinal orthodoxy, with an American bishop among the candidates, but hasn’t made a decision yet, a Vatican official said Wednesday.

Benedict has been meeting almost daily with his No. 2 at the congregation, Monsignor Angelo Amato - also cited by some as another possible candidate - and in recent days has met nearly all the major heads of top Vatican offices to sound them out on potential candidates, the Vatican official said.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he didn’t believe the pope had yet reached a decision.

A little bird reminded me of this prayer found on the SF diocese website just this year:

Blessing Our Oneness

The good Archbishop was an "errand boy" for the Holy Father once upon a time. I bet if this happens, the Holy Father keeps the real portfolio, the Archbishop remains an Archbishop (and does the copying and filing) and a new, orthodox Cardinal Archbishop ends up in San Francisco. I like the way this Holy Father works.

Frank, I think that you have the spirit of it - if not the very particulars of what will happen. I am suspecting Pope Benedict XVI wants to get someone who is very tough against the URI into San Francisco, and getting Levada out may be worth the price of promotion.

Though I think it was the Chessy Cat in the Walt Disney movie (Humpty Dumpty wasn't even in that!).

Dear Siobhan,

"and getting Levada out may be worth the price of promotion."

That seems like a pretty pricey promotion, indeed.

Isn't there a more... harmless job for him?? Like maybe President of the Commission to Negotiate Hygiene-Related Theological Differences, or something like that?

Is Archbishop Levada so incompetent that he will be unable to grasp the machinery of the CDF and wield it to his own ends? Is Pope Benedict so completely competent that he will be able to work his will with the CDF even with a nominal head not necessarily of the same mind?
