FYI..Today's NY Times had a thoughtful, well written, balanced, and lengthy obit for Diane Knippers....
ABC Rowan Williams said, "I look forward to meeting him and working together to build on the legacy of his predecessor, as we seek to promote shared understanding between our churches in the service of the Gospel and the goal of Christian unity."
What the other church leaders, like Williams, fails to understand is that when the Roman Catholic Pope & his predecessors speak about engaging in ecumenism & seeking unity it is with the objective of reunifying ALL Christian believers under the umbrella of the "One, TRUE, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church"...the Church in Rome lead by St. Peter's successor. The whole concept that other Christian expressions of faith (Anglican, Lutheran, et al) are "separate, but equal," isn't even on Pope B16's radar screeen. Listen to his homilies. Read his many writings on the subject. From Virtue's article..."Pope Benedict's well-known stands include the assertion that Catholicism is "true" and other religions are "deficient"...And some, with their female clergy, homosexual Bishops, support for abortion, & whacked-out liturgy are more "deficient" than others...Eh, Williams? Does anyone really think the Roman Catholic Church or Pope Benedict could be unified with such a corrupted & corrupting influence? Utter nonsense.
Also from this article:
[Desmond]Tutu said something incredible: "God is not a Christian. We sometimes make out that God is in the preserve of one particular faith. We need to have church leaders who are open to interfaith dialogue who are aware that truth is not encapsulated only in the Christian faith,'' adding that one of the "holiest people" he had ever met was the Dalai Lama, Tibet's Buddhist spiritual leader.
The Anglican Church certainly has no shortage of "deficient" spiritual leadership.
