Personally I think it has more to do with his nature as a studious Priest.
You are right though, we may never know how much the prophecies had to do with his choice.

Don't think he didn't know the prophecy as well...St. Benedict is a great namesake, though...I like the image of Benedict puting order into the monastic movement, may Pope Benedict bring order to the church.
