Liberal (Pittsburgh Diocese) church gets new bishop

“The Episcopal bishop of West Virginia, the Rt. Rev. William Michie Klusmeyer, will provide alternative oversight for St. Brendan’s Episcopal Church under a tentative agreement between the Franklin Park parish and the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Although some work remains to complete the formal paperwork, Pittsburgh Bishop Robert W. Duncan Jr. mentioned Klusmeyer by name at both the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday services at St. Brendan’s. Duncan was at the church for a regularly scheduled visit.

Klusmeyer’s appointment is believed to be the first in which a liberal Episcopal parish has requested and been granted alternative oversight by its conservative bishop.

Duncan declined comment yesterday through a spokesman. The Rev. Catherine Munz, rector of St. Brendan’s, could not be reached for comment.

The parish had been working for the past several months to find a bishop with whom it shared more in common than Duncan, a leader of the 2.3 million-member national church’s conservative wing.

He also is moderator of the year-old Network of Anglican Communion Dioceses and Parishes, an organization of representatives from about a dozen dioceses that disagree with the Episcopal Church’s 2003 consecration of an openly gay New Hampshire bishop and its tacit approval of same-sex blessings….”
