[Uh, 2 Cor. 9:8 would have helped here =-)] These neighbors were an offense and a danger. Love in this instance would be "calling those things that be not as if they were," and REBUKING those demons next door in Jesus Name!!!
Cast those demons to the pits of hell thereby freeing those people is one of the greatest acts of love one can perform.
You're obviously right concerning the offense and danger, and one can argue that having them all arrested and put in jail could be the best 'love' that anyone might have shown (I've seen it happen), but I think the insight the writer had was that he actually wished for their death rather than their salvation.
