Its the culture of death which the old pope has so often decried. Did you know that until just a couple of years ago, it was perfectly fine to execute people with mental retardation who committed "capital" offenses and when the Supreme Court declared that cruel and unusual punishment, the right went wild with anger? As a society we have much to answer for. The burden of sin is so great all we can do is pray unceasingly and change our lives in the ways and through the ascesis the Church teaches. As the Fathers wrote, "All creation groans."
