HBO's Bill Maher Says Christians Have Neurological Disorder, Are Crazy Dear Kimberly,

Bill Maher, host of HBO's Real Time With Bill Maher, says that all Christians are crazy and are unenlightened because of their faith. Maher made the comments on MSNBC's Scarborough Country.

Maher said: "We are a nation that is unenlightened because of religion…I think that religion stops people from thinking. I think it justifies crazies. I think that flying planes in a building was a faith-based initiative. I think religion is a neurological disorder. If you look at it logically, it's something that was drilled into your head when you were a small child."

"When you look at belief in such things--as do you go to heaven, is there a devil--we have more in common with (Muslin countries) Turkey and Iran and Syria than we do with European nations and Canada and nations that, yes, I would consider more enlightened that us."

Maher said he wasn't speaking only of evangelicals, but included all religious people. He said he agreed with Jesse Ventura "who had that quote about religion is a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers."

Because of their neurological disorder, he said Christians "do not believe in science and rationality." He went on to say the future does not belong to religion. One recalls the famous quote from the Beatles in the 60's that they "were more popular than Jesus."

According to Maher, the Bible is a book of fairy tales, calling the account of Jonah a fairy tale the same as Jack in the Beanstalk.

Had Maher said such things about homosexuals, he would have been immediately fired. But because he was speaking of Christians, his bigotry was acceptable to HBO, owned by Time Warner Inc. Sincerely,

Don

Donald E. Wildmon, Founder and Chairman American Family Association

TAKE ACTION

Send Mr. Maher an email saying you regret he has such a low view of Christians, and will pray that he be "enlightened" as to the true nature of Christianity. Explain to him that Christians appreciate the good science does and most Christians are rational individuals."

This is the kind of reaction a comic is looking for. He is similar to Howard Stern. Say something wild and get a huge backlash, which plays into their hands by giving them more material. I say ignore this idiot.

Me again.Wanted to include a copy of the email I sent back. I couldn't resist, as this is one of the BIG 3 that gets my blood boiling! Thank you for indulging me.(Part of this was generic, as American Family starts us off, I'll put in quotes my additions.)

Dear Mr. Maher:

I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of Christianity that you think Christians are crazies who have a neurological disorder, and that we aren't rational individuals or appreciate science. Maybe if you got to know some Christians better, you would have a better opinion of their faith. "I am wondering, as I read your comments about being taught things as a child, if perhaps you have had a bad experience somewhere down the line. Did you parents FORCE you to go to church? Did you go to a church that was restrictive and allowed you to only be seen and not heard? Did you participate in Sunday School and Vacation Bible school?

If your answers are 'NO' to all of these, then my guess is that you are simply shooting from the hip with NO evidenciary support to back up your claim. It's easy to jump on the band wagon and begin to bash someone or something when you know very little about them, and when the political party you wanted to win - did not. So - lets bash us 'crazies' and blame us for everything.

You know, recently, a professor from the University of Louisville made a similar comment - he suggested to his classroom of students that everyone should pick up an automatic weapon and "shoot the religious zealots" who got Bush re-elected. With enough letter writing and emailing, he was suspended indefinetly. Not sure if his back yet or not.

Now, my question to you is this: why is it okay for you to go on National television and bash Christians, call us crazy, and insinuate we have no rationale - but had you made this comment about Gays or any other group - you would have been kicked out the door when the show was through? You would have indeed lost your job! Do you know why? Because once AGAIN, THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW THE MEDIA CONTROLS THE MINDS OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC! HBO won't fire you, because this will bring them more publicity than they could have ever hoped for - without the lawsuits that truly would have followed had you been speaking about homosexuals. GOOD PRESS, MR. MAHER!"

Christians don't have all the answers, but we do know the Answer. And we aren't perfect, just forgiven. Thank God that you live in a country founded on the Christian worldview where you have the privilege of speaking your opinion." Do you know the term LAUS DEO? Look it up. It is inscribed on the Washington Monument, and "what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say "Praise be to God!" Perhaps you, Mr. Maher should study your HISTORY and become ENLIGHTENED as to what our FORFATHERS had in mind when they began this GREAT COUNTRY OF OURS! I promise you their thoughts were not on homosexuality and the other things 'liberals are blabbering about these days!"

Maybe when you get some time, you might research the contributions Christians and Christianity have made over the centuries, especially in our country.

"Mr. Maher, because I am a Christian, and I am directed by my Lord Jesus Christ to 'love my enemy' I will be in prayer for you. May God have Mercy on your soul."

Okay, that was my reply. Even though he is SO not worth it - if we do not defend ourselves, who will? (At least in this lifetime.)

Maher says: "I think that religion stops people from thinking."

Actually religion stops people from thinking like he does, when he thinks at all.

I wonder what Maher would have to say about some of the greatest thinkers of all time: Anselm, Augustine, Aquinas, and Boethius. Actually, I wonder if he's ever even heard of them at all. He's just a want-to-be-intellectual spouting off the typical moronic idiocy (no different than Ward Churchill in this regard). As has been pointed out, I doubt he has the guts to make such disparaging remarks about the Dalai Lama or Martin Luther King or Jesse Jackson or Malcolm X for that matter. Of course he wouldn't, he wouldn't dare offend these liberal religious icons!

I wonder if Maher knows who first proposed the idea of a "Big Bang." He is the unenlightened one; I feel sorry for him.

Intellectuals have been trumpeting the victory of science over Christ for some time now.

They are all dead or will be. Jesus is still Risen and Alive.

Thanks for posting this Just Kimberly! My reaction was much the same.

Bill may be right about my ignorance, I don't have a clue who he is and I don't watch HBO. I also lack the wisdom to understand why anyone would quote Jesse Ventura. The quote sounds like something Karl Marx would say.

Didn't say you couldn't (probably wrote it badly though). Just said that many of the so called "great thinkers" throughout history have rejected Christianity because it is to "simple and foolish", and because Jesus died on the cross.

That is why Gnosticism was such a dangerous heresy. People that that there was special knowledge, beyond the comprehension of most people, that could save you.
