Detroit, Jan. 26 (CWNews.com) - Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, a Detroit auxiliary and an outspoken proponent of liberal causes, has hinted that he may refuse to submit his resignation, as required by Church law, when he reaches his 75th birthday.
Bishop Gumbleton, who turns 75 today (January 26), told the Toledo Blade that he was reluctant to submit his resignation. He complained that the Vatican response to resignations is "so arbitrary-- some of them they ignore, but if you are the least bit progressive, they accept it immediately."

Bishop Gumbleton, who turns 75 today (January 26), told the Toledo Blade that he was reluctant to submit his resignation. He complained that the Vatican response to resignations is "so arbitrary-- some of them they ignore, but if you are the least bit progressive, they accept it immediately."
For years Bishop Gumbleton has ranked among the most "progressive" prelates in the American hierarchy. A consistent critic of American foreign policies, he has been at the forefront of protests against nuclear weapons, support for governments fighting leftist rebels in Central America, and military intervention in Iraq.
In recent years, Bishop Gumbleton has also attracted public attention with his complaints that the Church denigrates women, and needs to take a more accepting attitude toward homosexuals. A protégé of Detroit's Cardinal John Dearden, Gumbleton became an auxiliary bishop when he was only 38 years old. Since that time he has remained thoroughly committed to his vision of a socially active Church. He told the Toledo Blade, "If you are saving souls one at a time you really aren't going to get very far."
Like how the mandatory retirement age worked so well for these libs back in the day so they could get rid of the conservatives, but now it comes back to bite them in the *ss.
In any case, he's been around far too long already. It's time for him to go.
"but if you are the least bit progressive,"
The Catholic Church has no room for "progressives".
I believe he was ordained sometime in the late 50's...so he actually said the Tridentine Mass for a few years. In any case, his generation of priests & bishops (those born in 30's) were the ring leaders in wrecking the church. They were the ones who influenced the baby boomer priests we're stuck with right now.
I hate that word progressive. We should reclaim it, because progress really is the property of orthodoxy.
Guess God's way and God's time are not good enough for him.
When people start putting adjectives in front of 'Catholic' it seems very worldly.
Silly me, I thought it was God's business to save us. I don't know where that idea came from, it certainly doesn't sound very 'progressive', it almost sounds Catholic.
Sad isnt it. Hes a bishop in my archdiocese (at least when Im home from college or on Sundays when my friend and I leave the Lansing diocese.)
For example "Stage 4" is almost always terminal. So I am amused and hoping they speed up the "progress" and are all dead and buried in a few more years.
ROTFL
one wonders how the bishop would propose souls be saved. also very sad that he sees the saving of just one soul as not "getting very far" Maybe he should re-read the parable of the good shepherd and the one lost sheep.....
That's because he believes in only the "Social Gospel". There is no room for individual worth and holiness in that viewpoint. If you ever read his crap, he sometimes blatantly, almost always subtely denies the actual historical reality of the Gospels. To him, the Gospels are one big allegory that he uses to shape his own "Gospel" that advances "peace and justice"...i.e. socialism, marxism...anything but true Christianity.
Progressive don't generally believe in hell or eternal damnation so the whole "saving souls" is pious nonsense to them, not a reality.
Too bad. It would have been a good exercise in submitting humbly and surrendering his will to a superior.
One day, and probably soon, he's going to be called to submit a permanent resignation. It will be final, irrevocable and he won't have much choice in the matter. This would have been good practice for that event which awaits us all.
