That was my reaction when I walked into the Indult Tridentine Mass for the first time several years ago.

I don't doubt that one bit, CofD, and you can always come home to the Faith of your ancestors! :)

My understanding is that the Byzantine colonies in Italy remained in communion with Rome after the schism, so technically they'd have been Greek Catholic.
I can't say for sure on this, but I do know that there were many, many communities in the Christian world which simply ignored the schism and stayed in communion with both Churches. I know this happened in a number of places throughout the Balkans and the Aegean. Gradually the boundaries hardened though and communities "chose sides".
