The lay council and the Priest were probably more than a little miffed at the intransigence of the seasoned, tough, Parishoners.
Yeah, the council and priest don't seem to like it when someone stands in the way of their "uglification & irreverence plan"! Good for those parisoners, and I hope many more turn to be just like 'em!
