Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, the chief architect of Pope John Paul II's traditionalist moral policy, has long been a bugaboo for liberal Catholics. But they had stopped worrying that the German might one day ascend to St. Peter's throne. His hard-line views and blunt approach had earned him the epithet of panzerkardinal and too many enemies. Well, their worrying may now resume. Sources in Rome tell TIME that Ratzinger has re-emerged as the top papal candidate within the Vatican hierarchy, joining other front runners such as Dionigi Tettamanzi of Milan and Claudio Hummes of Sao Paolo. "The Ratzinger solution is definitely on," said a well-placed Vatican insider.

Arinze visited the seminary I studied at back in 85 or 86. He stopped at my room to chat. Very friendly and gregarious--but I would not want to see him as pope. I don't think he understands the conflict over the liturgy very well. Nice guy, though.
He understands the conflict perfectly. You just don't like his solution, which is the continuation of the Indult.
If you SSPXers were smart, you'd take a Tridentine Rite. But I don't believe the SSPX is interested in reconciliation.
You guys love being the "remnant." Lots of mileage to be gained from portraying yourselves as picked on by the nasty old Vatican.
They all appear so bad. There are no conservatives left. I don't think it really matters. When the Holy Ghost wants to step in and turn things around, he can do it, in a single breath, with either a liberal or a moderate.
Tell me about it. The last NO Mass I attended, in English, that is, was the Catholic version of Dr. Schuller's Hour of Power, complete with silky white robe for the 'pastoral associate.'
It just gets worse and worse.
No possibility that an American could be elected. Just look at the undistinguished flock of media-driven shepherds! (Most polite way to put it.)
Which is why mainline Protestants are converting to the Novus Ordo while cradle Catholics flee to SSPX, the Orthodox or conservative non-denom bible churches.
You don't get it. It's got nothing to do with our feelings. If Rome won't restore Tradition, then we must follow it on our own. That's where the faith is.
I get it perfectly. Fellay likes being a big fish in a small pond.
Geeesh, Opus Dei is getting to be like Starbucks, on every corner!!
Arinze is also a favorite papabile.

He's in good health for a man his age. And traditionally popes to no serve more than 10 years.
They will end up like the Old Catholics"
"I get it perfectly. Fellay likes being a big fish in a small pond."
Oh, sure. He just loves all the abuse he takes daily. All the SSPX priests do. And the 15-hour days, 7 days a week. And the lies and put-downs and nasty charges of excommunication and schism. Here's more of that same last interview with Michael Davies:

John Bishop: But you understand where I am going with this question. That means you end up in the Vatican at some stage. You meet up with Cardinal Ratzinger one of the leading princes of the Church. The man who had to, at least assist, in the so called "excommunication" of Archbishop Lefebvre. And there you are. Any embarrassment involved?
Michael Davies: No. I must point out that nobody excommunicated Archbishop Lefebvre. Not Cardinal Ratzinger. Not the Pope. He had what is called an automatic excommunication.
JB: So no one formally said, "I excommunicate thee"?
MD: No, no. If you consecrate a bishop without the authority of the Pope you are automatically excommunicated but it is not for schism. Its for
JB: For disobedience?
MD: No. It is what is called "usurping an ecclesiastical office" and there are very good reasons for claiming that this excommunication was invalid. Ill just give examples. If you break some article of Canon Law because a state of emergency exists in the Church, even if you incur excommunication that excommunication is invalid. Now, even if no objective state of emergency exists, if the person who thinks it does sincerely believes it does, then he is not excommunicated.
JB: Oh
this is wonderful!
MD: Our canonical expert from Una Voce, Count Neri Capponi, said that in 1983 the Vatican brought in a new Code of Canon Law which is absolutely pathetic. It is almost impossible to be excommunicated and so he said they cannot resurrect the 1917 Code of Canon Law just to fix Archbishop Lefebvre.
JB: Just to fix a nuisance so to speak.
MD: Yes. The excommication turned out to be a total fiasco. When the excommunications took place there were a hundred and seventy priests in the Society of St Pius X. Do you know how many there are now? Four hundred and fifty in sixty different countries.
Oh, for heaven's sake! Davies bought into that "state of emergency" nonsense?
Who cares how we end up, just as long we follow the faith while the rest of you are singing Rock of Ages and praying to Luther for guidance?
Sink, you're a barrel of laughs. You think the Church is doing well because your church still fills its pews. It's a little short-sighted, wouldn't you say, considering the Church in Europe is collapsing around the Pope's ears even as we speak? You should care a little more about the big picture.
You belong to a sect that has a million members and you want me to wring my hands over a Church that has a billion people in it?
You think the Pope praying to the Great Thumb is professing orthodoxy while traditionalists are unorthodox for sticking with the ancient Mass?
That makes perfect sense.
