A boy and his dog and a little faith (Lutheran Davey & Goliath Return to TV)

After a nearly 30-year hiatus, Davey Hansen and his faithful dog Goliath are back to teach values to a new generation of young people.

The Lutheran church is reviving the 1960s-era animated series for a holiday special, Davey & Goliath's Snowboard Christmas, on the Hallmark Channel. It airs at noon today and will be repeated the same time on the day after Christmas.

If things go well, Goliath's exasperated "Oh, Davey" will be heard many times again when his master gets into trouble.

The original series was produced from 1960 to '65 and distributed free to television stations. Many eagerly aired the 15-minute episodes on Sunday mornings; it was a solid PR move to show wholesome children's programming with a religious component.

"If you can find somebody between 40 and 60, they'll tell you a Davey & Goliath story," said the Rev. Eric Shafer, communications director for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and a key figure in bringing the series back.

From the article...

"The church wanted it to be about love and tolerance, and that's not the face of Christianity in America," he said. "In the '60s and '70s, Christianity was more of a liberal faction. There are still millions of liberal Christians who go to church, but they are not represented on TV anymore."

Shafer said Davey & Goliath is "very much an interfaith show about the oneness of the three faces of Abraham."

*************

I had no idea this was "liberal" show!

Just what we need! More liberal, lovie-dovey, can't we all just get along, all faiths are equal, pseudo-religious vomit.

No thanks! I'll pass. My kids will also.

I'd say it's more a leftist claiming that the positive attitudes expressed in Davey and Goliath are lacking in conservatives.

Davey and Goliath were never helping distribute condoms to herion whores. They weren't organizing union halls, protesting the Viet Name war, or trying to elect Jim McGovern or Hubert Humphries. They didn't learn all about the local church's minister, her wife, and the fun toys that they like to play with when they are alone.

That quote was form the original producers...

"Ruth Clokey, daughter of a Lutheran minister, and her husband, Art, were the producers."

"l"iberal values, as in peace, love and tolerance. this is different from Liberal values, which includes sex education in the first grade, etc.

***Davey and Goliath were never helping distribute condoms to herion whores***

Liberalism starts off innocently enough with this simple slight of hand...

"God is love"

is replace by

"Love is God"

No, the quote was from the son of the original producers. But this made we want to gag, anyway:

"In the modern update Davey tries to show off his snowboarding prowess to two friends: Sam, a Jewish boy, and Yasmeen, a Muslim girl. Along the way, the three children compare their celebrations of Christmas, Hanukkah and Ramadan."

... The Muslim girl is then stoned to death for being seen with a boy. When the local Caliph finds out the boy is Jewish, he orders Yasmeen's mother and all her sisters raped and quartered.

"Gosh, Goliath, that Caliph sure is mean when he gets angry!"

"Oh, Davey, you know you shouldn't judge other people's religions like that!"

"You're right, Goliath. It just goes to show you that all us Euro-American kids are evil."

Davey and Goliath both chuckle at the obvious truism.

Moreover, they confuse definitions of Love. God is Caritas.

I used to love this show. They played it in my Catholic school if we were lucky. The Easter episode used to make everyone depressed.

"Hey Daaavey, don't be sad just 'cause your grandmother died."

He's also an angry God:

Exodus 20:5..."You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me...."

***He's also an angry God:***

Indeed. How could man say he truly loved his wife and sit by, passively and apathetically, and watch her destroy herself with poison?

Even so, God's greatest anger is reserved for the sin which He knows can deface, pervert, consume and drag down to hell all those who choose it over Him.
