Well, of course, there's all that Mother of God business, but really now, if you do a correct reading of the Scriptures, the Messiah could be a male or female. Mary, herself, appears to meet the requirements.

I'm sure that somewhere some religious scholar has thoroughly examined the situation and used that idea, at least in part, as the basis for the justification of current veneration.
