Bishop Wilton D. Gregory, who was president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops during the height of the clergy molestation crisis, has been appointed by Pope John Paul II to serve as Archbishop of Atlanta, the archdiocese announced Thursday.
Gregory, who had been serving as bishop in Belleville, Ill., will become Atlanta's sixth archbishop.
"I welcome the opportunity to serve the people of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. I am deeply grateful to the Holy Father for his confidence and support," Gregory said.
He succeeds Archbishop John F. Donoghue, who is resigning for reason of age. He is 76.
You got that right. Archbishop Donoghue was and is one of the good guys..

I always remember (stop me if I've told you this one) a good friend of mine in college whose dad was a prof in the Classics department. They went to the Holy Land, and as they were driving up the Mount of Olives they passed a priest in a dusty black cassock who was toiling up the hill. Her dad stopped the car and asked in his best Latin, "Greetings, Father, may we convey you to the summit of the mountain?"
Turned out the priest was from Milwaukee, but I thought it was a nice gesture nonetheless!

Among the more egregious of the Big Lies folks today have swallowed is the notion that JPII is conservative or traditional, I think.
Particularly given the caliber of archbishops and cardinals appointed by the man, I see no reason to believe that claim.

This totally sucks (IMHO). Gregory is no Donoghue. I wonder who we are going to get in San Antonio (cringes).
I guess one could look at this in one of two ways. Either Gregory has been sent down here to breathe some conservative air and learn what Catholicism really means from people of faith, or he's a hit man sent to mop up one of the few remaining pockets of resistance to the Amchurch new order.
If he does absolutely nothing, I'll be delighted.

I have some Catholic friends in Atlanta and have only heard good things about Archbishop Donoghue. I hope and pray that Gregory won't disrupt the good vibes down there or have a secret agenda.
What on earth are the boys in Rome THINKING?
Donahue refused to obey the Popes directives to allow the Tridentine Mass when he was bishop of Charlotte. When he moved to Atlanta, he was very stingy with the Mass (allowing is once a month on Wednesday evenings in a very modern Church).
He eventually allowed the FSSP to establish an apostolate in Atlanta, so maybe he's changed, but I have always been skeptical of his orthodoxy.
Evidently the Vatican thinks that Sherman's March was not sufficient punishment for the South.
Could be worse, I suppose. It could be Lipscomb, or Trautmann, or the flamingo in Toledo...
I think I know a Bishop who would learn about pistol-craft to prevent that from happening...

The last time I saw a picture of him was when the relics and bones were being returned to our Eastern half, and he looked quite ill. Also, the expression on his face, to me, seemed one of agitation, for lack of a better word. Not the peaceful expression I associate with him. I know he's ill, but the expression, as I perceived it seemed separate from that.
