In need of a history lesson here. In the past, when a clear and present danger, on a similar order of magnitude presented itself, was the Laity as incapable of effecting a favorable outcome as it is now? Or is schism the only way out? Excellent question which I have also wondered. Are there any historical precedents to follow? I think I've heard of heretical bishops being chased out of their cathedrals by angry mobs, but I think that was in the East.
I'd be interested to hear any input from those who know of historical precedents where the laity took action against heretical and/or corrupt prelates.

I don't ever recall hearing about mobs chasing anyone out - unless he was one of the good guys;-)
The Church usually ended up with those in authority fixing the problem - I don't believe the Church has ever seen so many enemies at the same time in positions of authority.
Maybe nows the time to be the mob and run them out?

Usually as during the Arian heresy, God provided strong Bishops to counter evil. We have some of those Bishops now.
The question is how can we support them? I suggest:
1. Prayer and the offering of a Mass
2. Provide only parish level donations and no longer support your diocese or the USCCB (which receives a 1/2 of its funding from each diocese), instead send a check with a copy to your diocese to one of the Bishops that is making a stand
3. Become involved even if it will drive you nuts in your parish specifically in the areas of the Liturgy and CCD (grass roots and take back the parishes).
