Former bishop in domestic dispute
The Wanderer ^ | 21st October 2004 | Paul Likoudis

Former Springfield Bishop Daniel Ryan, who resigned his office in October 1999, three years after Steve Brady, founder of Roman Catholic Faithful (RCF), reported him to be a homosexual predator, was allegedly the subject of a domestic battery investigation by Springfield police in early July.

According to a Springfield Police Department report, dated July 5, 2004, the former bishop was accused of kicking a man he had befriended.

According to Steve Brady, who spoke with Ryan’s neighbors about the incident, the man who made the complaint went to Ryan’s home early on the morning of July 5, to go to Mass with Ryan, and found Ryan with another man who was "younger and better looking." The man became upset, and when he wouldn’t leave, Ryan reportedly kicked him.

The man then ran to a neighbor’s house, allegedly screaming, "Bishop Ryan raped me," and the neighbor called 911 at approximately 6 a.m.

At the time the complainant went to Ryan’s neighbor’s house, he possessed a plane ticket to Portugal, and was planning to go abroad as Ryan’s companion.

Also according to Brady — who was tipped off to the incident by an individual in Springfield Bishop George Lucas’ circle of friends — Ryan reportedly met his future companion when the man, who is on disability and has psychological problems, called a "diocesan phone number" requesting assistance.

The names in the police report on the incident, which Brady obtained through a Freedom of Information request after hiring an attorney, are blacked out; but the report does refer to the "ex-bishop" and does contain the address of Ryan’s home, which the diocese purchased for him almost immediately after his resignation.

The report says the alleged victim — no charges were ever filed against Ryan because of "conflicting statements and no independent witnesses" — met Bishop Ryan after calling a diocesan phone number two-and-a-half months ago, and that after meeting, Ryan invited him to his residence where he "wined him with alcoholic beverages causing him to become tipsy. After doing so, [blacked out] suggested that he lie down in his bed. . . ."

The police report also describes in graphic detail how [blank] attempted to seduce the man, and told him "he could not have sexual intercourse with him because he is a prophet of God and that the Pope says that homosexuality is abnormal and immoral," and so [blank] proceeded to perform a homosexual act.

Ryan’s alleged victim also told police that Ryan and he "had an ongoing relationship" and that Ryan "bought him gifts and jewelry and clothing, and the two have exchanged photographs of each other . . . and [they] were sexually active, and the two of them have a trip planned to Portugal. . . ."

The alleged victim explained to police that he went to Ryan’s residence that morning "because he wanted to find out the status of his relationship with [Ryan] who had another male subject with him."

While police were interviewing the alleged victim, Ryan and his other male friend went off to Mass, returning about two hours later, when Ryan gave his version of the incident.

While most Catholics in the diocese know nothing of this incident involving their former bishop, Brady says it is common knowledge among the police, the politicians, the media, and other public officials.

"They’re laughing at us," he told The Wanderer in an interview. "Ryan’s neighbors know about the incident; the priests of the diocese know about it.

"Here we have another incident where the bishops say they want to be open and transparent, but they are still lying and covering-up. . . .

"The fact is, here is another bit of information adding to the rock-solid proof that RCF was right from the beginning; but Ryan is allowed to continue to destroy souls on Church property. A fellow with some psychological problems calls the Church for help, and he ends up in Ryan’s bed. . . .

"The sad thing is, Ryan needs help. He has diabetes, heart problems, he’s grossly overweight, but Church leaders are still enabling him to destroy himself. Every priest in the chancery who protected Ryan when he was bishop is still there, still functioning — and they were made monsignors by Bishop Lucas."

The big question, Brady concluded, is "why haven’t they [diocesan officials] apologized to me? For eight years, they have dragged my name, and my family, through the mud. And they defamed The Wanderer for reporting on Ryan. After all these years of covering up, they are still covering up. They cannot admit we were right."

The Wanderer telephoned diocesan spokesman Kathie Sass for an official response to the police report on the Ryan incident, but she insisted repeatedly that she "never received" a copy and, therefore, could not respond.

Asked if the chancery was conducting an investigation into the incident, to determine how a psychologically troubled man who approached the diocese for help ended up in Ryan’s home, she responded, "I’m sorry, you’ll have to ask Bishop Ryan."

Asked if the diocese had interviewed the men named in the police report as being Ryan’s lovers, or if the diocese had paid any money to the men, she responded, "I’m sorry, I have not seen the police report."

Asked if she believed that she owed an apology to Steve Brady or The Wanderer for publicly defaming both in her efforts to defend Bishop Ryan from charges that he was a homosexual predator over the past half-dozen years, she responded:

"Those are inappropriate questions to ask me."

Bishop Ryan is currently in a hospital undergoing knee surgery, but is expected to take up residence at St. Francis Convent, which is adjacent to the Brother James Court, a residence for mentally handicapped men.

The Wanderer asked Sass if provisions would be made to ensure that Ryan did not have access to these men, and she responded, "I’m sorry, you’ll have to ask Bishop Ryan."

During our conversation, she did offer, however, that "Bishop Ryan has been removed from all ministry and is a private citizen."

Sad, but true.

Hoping to bring down Christ's Church, trying to rot It from within.

Why did this diocese even buy a house for him?

I've learned that when it comes to the American clergy, never think that you've heard everything.

Why did the pope promote this pervert in the first place?

"Former Springfield Bishop Daniel Ryan, who resigned his office in October 1999 ..."

In spite of the overwhelming evidence against him, however, Ryan continues to enjoy the favor of brother bishops, participating in episcopal consecrations (diocese of Joliet, led Bishop Joseph Imesch), confirming youngsters, and conducting priest retreats. Bishop Imesch, Cardinal George, and other Church officials continue to maintain the party line's baseless denial of the facts, chanting the hollow mantra of "unsubstantiated allegations." Perhaps they still believe (even after Dallas!) that if they deny the truth together in a united front, and maintain the lie for long enough, the truth will just go away. This will not happen. No longer will faithful Catholics buy the party line from men who have proven they are not to be trusted. The press will continue to dig, to expose the truth. So will the Roman Catholic Faithful. God willing, we will work to expose the truth until the bishops go away.

How do we begin a campaign to laicize this distorted individual who masquerades as a Catholic bishop?

Bishops are above the law. They don't get laicized.

All too many Bishops are either gay themselves, or have had some manner of blackmail used against them - of one kind or another - to keep them from breakeing the "pink wall of silence". It is that simple. There are a few good bishops out there, but they are essentially powerless to do anything of substance, lest there be massive retribution.

This explains the seeming inaction, reticence, and out & out lying which is the norm. Also in this is the explanation for the wide spread coverup.

Bishop Lucas - Ryan's successor - as seen by the articles on RCF - has all the apperances of being a Mason. even if he is literally not, such things as his presense in a Masonic Temple would have him suspended from office, if the Church were functioning properly. But no - he is allowed to function, and to raise 24 million dollars for continued heresy, and other abuses of his office.

The leaders are Mahoney and Egan. Their history shows them to be the leaders of efforts to maintain the status quo. They are the successors to Bernadin - and were both close to him. These two literally have connived to protect, defend, promote, and reassign the guilty. They did not do so by accident, out of ignorance, or because they were forced to - they did so willingly, and conspiratorilly.

These men have blood on their hands - literally and figuratively. Young boys and men who have ben coerced into sex with preists pretected by these prelates lead broken lives - and some killed themselves, as they could not live with the fact.

And they have blood on their hands in other ways - there have been all too many murders connected to clerical sex abuse, in more then one diocese. The lines of connection and connivance lead to the local apostate Bishops....who are supported by Mahoney and Egan, and thus protected.

Of right, Egan should - as Metropolitan - see personally to the investigation of Hubbard of Albany, and to his defrocking. But that will not happen.....as they are of the same cloth, and belong to the same clubs.

We must pray very hard and say many Rosaries that prelates such as these either by converted, or struck down and sent to judgement, and thence to hell. But pray that God's will be done.

Because if God does not shortly cause their conversion and repentance, they will be taking the down escalator. And take many souls with them

To start, get a pack of matches. Urge others to do the same.

You can't make this stuff up.

I wonder how the faithful of the diocese feel knowing that the house, which their money purchased, is being used for the former bishop's trysts? How many would be happy to know that their hard earned pennies are facilitating debauchery?

The article doesn't address this point directly but it would certainly appear that Ryan is an unreformed, unapologetic sodomite, rather than a self-acknowledged sinner who has repented and wishes to remain celibate but who, through human weakness, is still prone to give in to temptation. May the Lord forgive me if I'm jumping to conclusions here.

If the accounts of the poor state of his health are accurate, he appears determined to indulge himself until the end.

He needs to be laicized, pronto.

"Bishops are above the law. They don't get laicized."

You are quite right. Bishop Dupre is another case in point...

Dupre is another good example of what I meant when I said that bishops are above the law.
I cannot name one instance where any American bishop has been laicized following exposure for such things as grand theft, pedophilia, public sodomite staus. Not to mention such things as open defiance of papal directives, vandalism of church property, violation of canon law norms and just plain heresy.
A prominant midwestern archbishop, a self admitted theif and sodomite, is still featured in "catholic" magazines and confirming kids.
These guys and the reprobate bishops (almost all of our bishops) who protect and coddle them are causing many to lose their faith and inspire disgust in those of us who remain.
