I was talking about this to a Baptist "Christian", who told me that my daughter would be cured if she went to her church and renounced her sinful lifestyle.

You sure they were Baptist? Sounds more like Santeria or voodoo, or maybe the outer fringes of Pentecostalism.

Only the disciples didn't yet have the book of John to read so they could know better.
