The principle that always meant defeat in the lives of the nation of Israel is given to us in the very last verse of the book. If you miss that, you miss the key to the book:

In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes. (Judges 21:25)

And then, sadly missing the key to the book, Stedman goes on to talk about the second half of that verse, namely "doing right in his own eyes". The key to the book, indeed the key to understanding not only the book of Judges but 1 and II Samuel, and as well, is the phrase "In those days there was no king in Israel".

It is virtually the same phrase as John 19:15 "we have no King but Caesar".
